In an effort to bring attention to the undertreatment of pain in America, Dr. James Campbell, president of the American Pain Society, encouraged healthcare providers to treat pain as seriously as they do vital signs. From Campbell's speech in 1996, the concept of pain as the "fifth vital sign" was born. Although clearly not the original intention, this new idea of pain treatment has driven the current complex pain management state of overuse and abuse. But that was just the start.

Pharmacists ranked as the 29th best job in the United States in 2016, according to CareerCast's latest ranking of 200 careers.
This ranking was a slight dip from last year, when pharmacist was slotted as the 27th best job out of 200.
"Health care is one of the U.S. economy's pillars, sustaining growth even through there have been employment downturns in other industries," CareerCast wrote in its report. "Increased access to health care and more emphasis on preventative care have further fueled the importance of health care professions."

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved Venclexta for the treatment of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia who have a chromosomal abnormality called 17p deletion and who have been treated with at least one prior therapy. Lawmakers in Indiana agreed to give pharmacists discretion to limit how much OTC pseudoephedrine products customers can buy. SEA 80 was signed into law by Gov. Mike Pence of Indiana on March 21 and received support from the Indiana Pharmacists Alliance.
