BOMA Austin
Last week, hundreds of BOMA members met with more than 200 U.S. Representatives and Senators to discuss the most pressing issues facing the commercial real estate industry, as part of the Winter Business Meeting & National Issues Conference. Members took to the Hill to advocate for infrastructure investment, ADA lawsuit reform and the preservation of ENERGY STAR. These meetings provided lawmakers and their staff with first-person insight into how these issues are affecting building owners and managers on a day-to-day basis.
Learn more about BOMA's priority issues and access materials used during the conference on BOMA's 2018 Legislative Priorities and the Tax Reform Bill Analysis webpages. BOMA staff will be following up on these meetings in the coming weeks to help further our industry's priorities. And, if you participated in the congressional visits, it's not too late to submit your feedback online. For additional information, contact BOMA International's Manager of Government Affairs and PAC, Meg Novak, at mnovak@boma.org.

Amazon's Super Bowl ad has people wondering if the company dropped a big hint about which city it will pick for its second headquarters.
The ad featured during the Super Bowl shows Amazon's personal assistant device "Alexa" losing her voice while delivering the weather in Austin. In a Texas Monthly article about the ad, they speculate that the peacocks Anthony Hopkins is feeding could reference the peacocks roaming wild at Mayfield Park in Austin. They also note that perhaps it's not illness but Central Texas' loathed cedar fever that's causing Alexa to lose her voice.

In "The Great American Single-Family Home Problem," The New York Times reporter Conor Dougherty drives home the point that the high cost of housing in America's expensive coastal cities can be addressed by densifying the suburban landscape. At first glance this may seem obvious; combatting price appreciation calls for building more homes, and better to do so through infill than by exacerbating sprawl. But the notion of densifying the suburban landscape is a more radical departure from the status quo than it may seem.

In 2017, it's projected that more than 1.1 million people went to work, backpacks and big ideas in tow, at 13,800 coworking spaces worldwide, according to the 2017 Global Coworking Survey. Workplace culture — where employee behavior meets business outcomes — changes constantly. Think about it: as employees come and go, each brings or takes their beliefs and behaviors. As company or departmental goals change and as industry landscapes shift, workplace culture changes in response.
