Affectiva builds world's largest emotion analytics repository, 2 million faces analyzed
Affectiva is proud to have accumulated emotion analytics from more than 2 million faces across 80 countries, resulting in more than 7 billion emotion data points. Effectively, Affectiva has built the only emotion analytics database in the world, doubling the size of this database in less than a year. The data points were gathered from more than 15,000 media tests and offers researchers deep intelligence into human emotion, enabling them to more accurately understand consumers' unfiltered and unbiased emotional reactions to brands, advertising, TV pilots, movie trailers and other video content.

How we built the world's largest emotion data repository

When in March 2011 we first debuted Affdex, our flagship automated facial coding product, we had no idea our journey would someday lead to the world’s largest emotion repository. In fact, we wondered if anyone would even opt-in to turn their camera on and share their emotion responses. What happened blew us away!

The technology for Rana el Kaliouby's startup, Affectiva, resulted from her research into how facial-coding technologies can ease autism spectrum disorders. But the facial-expression-recognition technology also is valuable to marketers. Affectiva integrates the technology to measure and interpret viewers' emotional responses to brands, advertising and other digital content. "I remember thinking, I don’t know if I want to be in business! But what sold me was the vision of our technology becoming ubiquitous. It works in all sorts of contexts," el Kaliouby told Entrepreneur.

Comedy club charges per laugh with facial recognition

A comedy club in Barcelona is experimenting with charging users per laugh, using facial-recognition technology to track how much they enjoyed the show. The software is installed on tablets attached to the back of each seat at the Teatreneu club. Each laugh is charged at 0.30 euros with a cap of 24 euros. Takings are up so far.
