PROJECTS

CREC Discovery Academy
About:
The building underwent extensive remediation and deconstruction to ready it for additions and renovations. The 1960's area brick facade was in good condition with minimal spalling and hair-line cracks however its appearance and yellow color did not fit the scheme of the modern building it would be.

Challenges:
Products to be used for the renovation were required to be long-lasting, durable and sustainable and offer long-term economy. Also the designers did not want the brick to look old or covered by a thick paint layer, but hoped for a more uniform appearance across multiple types of surfaces.

Solutions:
Royalan Extreme Weather Mineral Silicate Finish was chosen for its weather resistant durability and long-term and economic life cycle, the fact that it will never blister or peel from the surface and that the color will not fade, even on southern and western exposures.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION

Chapel of the Cross, Chapel Hill, NC
About:
The Gothic Revival style church was designed by noted architect Thomas U. Walter. The red brick church has a gable roof and features a crenellated entrance tower and lancet windows. The original church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It is located in the Chapel Hill Historic District.

Challenges:
The brick facade had many layers of paint that was in poor overall condition. Water was penetrating the parapet walls as well as other areas of the facade, as the paint failed. The facade was also streaked with pollution and mildew. Ultimately, the congregation also planned a subtle color change to better blend with the pink granite of the newer, larger sanctuary that is connected by a cloister.

Solutions:
Inside walls of the parapet were waterproofed using Universalputz Historic Mix stucco, Silan 100 Water Repellent and Royalan Extreme Weather Mineral Silicate Finish. Parapet caps were also installed to eliminate bulk water intrusion. Paint was stripped from the historic brick, which was repointed and repaired as necessary. The surface was treated with one coat of Royalan Mineral Silicate Texture Base and then finished with Royalan Extreme Weather Mineral Silicate Finish in the new color.
