Traditional printing techniques combine in OLED display manufacture

Researchers have developed large-surface, light-emitting plastic film based on OLED technology that can be fabricated using gravure and screen-printing methods. Developed by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, this method is claimed to provide manufacturers with the opportunity to create patterned and flexible light-emitting surfaces on advertising displays, signs or lighting fixtures.

Tackling the "achilles' heel" of OLED displays

Flexible smartphones and color-saturated television displays were some highlights at this year's Consumer Electronics Showcase, held in January in Las Vegas. Many of those displays were made using organic light-emitting diodes, or OLEDs — semiconducting films about 100 nanometers thick, made of organic compounds and sandwiched between two electrodes, that emit light in response to electricity.


Nanomagnetic effects find a cool application
The magnetocaloric effect was in use as far back as the 1930s, employing magnets to cool materials to mK temperatures. However, in 1997, Ames Laboratory in the US reported "giant" manifestations of the effect. This re-ignited interest and scientists began to develop magnetic refrigeration cycles that could function nearer room temperature.
