Active Thin Films: Thin film batteries, anode and cathode materials

Structure and operation of batteries, thin film batteries (TFB), and thin film Li-ion batteries (TFLIB) in particular, were introduced last month. Basic battery structure, shown in Figure 1, consists of substrate, electrolyte, current collector, anode, cathode, and separator. Compared to their larger cousins, TFB are all solid state, and are assembled layer by layer by physical vapor deposition (PVD), chemical vapor deposition (CVD), self assembly, sol gel processes, pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and atomic layer deposition (ALD).
