Squid, jellyfish and wrinkled skin inspire materials for anti-glare screens and encryption
What do squid and jellyfish skin have in common with human skin? All three have inspired a team of chemists to create materials that change color or texture in response to variations in their surroundings. These materials could be used for encrypting secret messages, creating anti-glare surfaces, or detecting moisture or damage, they say.

Vacuum-enabled thin film deposition advances energy storage technologies

The concept of energy storage in thin films has been around for a long time. One of the early uses of the term 'Thin Film Battery' was in a 1976 patent by Exxon. Nearly 20 years later, Bates and his team at Oak Ridge National Laboratory patented the sputter-based, all solid state battery utilizing the electrolyte LiPON.

Electronic circuits printed at 1 micron resolution
A research team consisting of MANA Independent Scientist Takeo Minari, International Center for Materials Nanoarchitectonics (MANA), NIMS, and Colloidal Ink developed a printing technique for forming electronic circuits and thin-film transistors (TFTs) with line width and line spacing both being 1 µm. Using this technique, the research team formed fully-printed organic TFTs with a channel length of 1 µm on flexible substrates, and confirmed that the TFTs operate at a practical level.

ZnO-coated high-performance bearings developed
Researchers developed a coating technique using a zinc oxide (ZnO) material, an environment-friendly, low-friction material developed exclusively by NIMS. When bearing balls were coated with the ZnO material, the material's low frictional characteristics were maintained and the friction coefficient of the bearing was reduced by approximately one-third.

  3. What material will you be evaporating?
  4. Which source material is compatible with your evaporant?
  5. What temperature will you be reaching?
  6. How much power do you have to heat the source (amperage)?
  7. What capacity will you need to achieve your desired thickness?
  8. Are you evaporating in an upward, downward or sideways direction?
