How green is your hotel?
San Jose Mercury News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Maybe for one reason or another you've thought about staying in "eco-friendly" hotels when you travel, but you're not eager to join the League of Environmental Hairsplitters to figure out a conscientious choice. You're not unusual. The most recent industry survey of U.S. travelers, funded by a consortium of rental car, hotel, credit card and online travel booking companies, concluded that "green is mainstream." More

Coachella 2012: California dreamin' at the Saguaro and Ace hotels
Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Party people arriving at Palm Springs' new Saguaro Hotel recently were greeted with a mellow pool party scene that made it easy to forget that one of the country's most massive music festivals was taking place just down the road. Eight-dollar margaritas, ample parking at the hotel, no lines to get in and no lines for the bathroom were among the perks on the sunniest day of the first Coachella weekend. And while KCRW DJ Garth Trinidad laid down the beats, tattooed revelers floated lazily around the luxurious pool. More

Growing hotel market bodes well for HEI, despite universities' pull-back
News Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
HEI Hotels and Resorts, a Norwalk-based hotel investment firm, has lost some heavy-hitting university investors in the past two years, but a hospitality industry analyst suggests that the company should have little difficulty in attracting others to fill its coffers. The privately held company, which owns and manages 41 locations, operates three funds totaling more than $1.2 billion and has a history of solid returns for investors, said Mark Woodworth, president of PKF Consulting, an Atlanta-based hospitality consulting firm. Having worked the front desk at the hotel formerly known as the Stratford Inn for 10 years, Barbara DuRand loves knowing the Del Mar hotel's many regular guests — and their dogs — by name. Hoteliers weigh green as a value proposition
Hotel News Now    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
While a considerable amount of energy goes into obtaining certification for a sustainable property, hoteliers are mixed over whether those efforts pay off when marketing the hotel to environmentally-conscious travelers. Hans Pfister, president and co-owner of Cayuga Sustainable Hospitality S.A., a Costa Rica-based management company with eight hotels in its portfolio, said his team has found guests visiting their hotels typically do not consider sustainability to be an important factor in the decision-making process. However, Pfister does believe once people visit and see how sustainable the properties actually are, it plays a large role in their decision-making process to visit again. More

Hotels, rec centers try to slow pool access regulations
The Associated Press via San Jose Mercury News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Owners and managers of swimming pools at hotels, city recreation centers and public parks are scrambling to install mechanical chair lifts to comply with new federal requirements that all public pools be accessible to disabled swimmers. Some hotels fear the cost of the equipment or fines for noncompliance could put them out of business, and an industry lobbyist says others may close their pools this summer if they can't upgrade in time, though the government can offer more time to those having trouble paying for it. Swimmers with disabilities say the changes are overdue. More

The new perks of first-class travel
Reuters via The Montreal Gazette    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
During a recent trip to Colorado, jewelry designer Alicia Mohr planned another vacation from an unusual spot — a hot tub at a Starwood hotel, where she is a platinum-level preferred customer. Enjoying some beer with her husband and some friends led to a spontaneous decision to travel to Munich for Oktoberfest this fall. To make plans, Mohr simply called the private concierge that comes with her coveted platinum status. Quicker than you can say "oompah," they had guaranteed suites at a hotel at the entrance to Oktoberfest. "And we paid with points," Mohr says. "It doesn't get easier than that." More
