The way in which you 'sell' yourself to potential employers can make or break the chances of you landing that career-building job. You need to convince potential employers to consider you, through your cover letter and résumé, through the 'elevator pitch' you use in making cold calls and networking — basically through every touch point you have with employers. So just like a salesperson, you have to maintain a positive attitude and build your own momentum, not letting a lack of responses bring you down. The two biggest mistakes I find struggling job seekers make are: 1) approaching the job search from a deficit position; and 2) applying for jobs that don't match their specific qualifications and/or experience. Aside from the job interview, the second most stressful day at the office tends to be the day you announce you're leaving. Will you be shown the door instantly, or cajoled to stay? Will you be able to resist reeling off a list of criticisms about co-workers and company policies? "The central tenet of resigning from a job is: Don't burn bridges," says Andrew Atkins, a former human resources executive at Fidelity Investments and Bank of America who now works at the Boston consulting firm Interaction Associates. "You want to be as professional on your way out as you were on your way in." I think you should always let your employer know you are looking... By doing it as partners, the trust is not only not broken (as it is when someone gives two weeks notice, and you start thinking about all the lack of productivity and white lies that often took place in preceding weeks and months), but is actually enhanced. Finding a job — and a purpose

Job-seekers would be well-advised to consider looking at not-for-profits, given that government hiring, which for years was a staple of the Capital Region economy, is not what it used to be. Workers who lost jobs in the private-sector market during the recession now appear to be placing more value on doing work that is meaningful, rather than simply jumping to another paycheck, said Dan Moran, president of Next-Act Career Management and Transition, a business with offices in Albany and New York City that aids people who want to embrace new careers. "More people are saying they want to do something with a sense of meaning and purpose," Moran said. He said an annual survey of worker attitudes conducted by Bellevue University in Nebraska found that 47 per cent of respondents were re-evaluating career paths, a figure that is more than double the historical response. IT industry news: Internships 'lead to bigger salaries'

New research has offered evidence that completing an internship can help graduates to secure a better paid job. Published by Inspiring Interns, the survey found that people who carried out an unpaid internship received an average salary of £19,400 when they started full-time work. In contrast, graduates who went straight into a permanent role after finishing university had a typical starting salary of £17,900. Chief executive of Inspiring Interns Ben Rosen suggested that internships offer young people — including those seeking careers in IT — "a vital bridge between university and the job market." He added: "A placement on a graduate scheme no longer represents the only route to success in the graduate job market. Internships, both paid and unpaid, offer an important and credible alternative." Online tool to show Virginia students future earnings

A new online tool aims to help students figure out how much money they'll make in different careers. The Virginia Longitudinal Data System is set to go live. It's been in the works for about seven years, but it was mandated by legislation passed by the General Assembly this year. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that the system tracks by degree programs and schools the post-graduate wage outcomes of more than 836,000 college graduates since 1999. The system does have its limitations. It only includes graduates working full time in Virginia in positions that must be reported to the Virginia Employment Commission. More

Students not partaking in on-campus recruiting find jobs by other means

Beyond the suits, big info sessions and high publicity of the on-campus recruiting season lies another job-hunting culture. Students seeking jobs that don't traditionally recruit through OCR sometimes have to work harder to find jobs due to the lesser visibility their job search opportunities have. These students "have to do the legwork" to reach out through other opportunities, Director of Career Services Patricia Rose said. This is because companies in non-corporate industries typically do not go to college campuses to actively recruit students. Fifty-two per cent of the Class of 2011 went into financial services and consulting, according to Career Services. However, there was still a sizeable percentage of students who went into other industries. More

When is a job interview too personal?

Amid objections to the federal agency's 57-question survey for new recruits and aspiring career climbers, employment lawyers say job seekers are expecting interviewers to get more in-depth and personal when judging prospective hires. And that could potentially spark legal wildfires, depending on how invasive the questions are. "Some of the questions employers are asking are beyond the boundaries of what's appropriate," said James Heeney, a Toronto employment lawyer with the firm Robinson Heeney LLP. "The issue is if someone wants a job, they'll often answer them because they don't want to lose the opportunity." Mark Rouse, a partner with the Toronto recruitment firm IQ Partners, said clients have been asked anything from whether they've ever been fired for stealing, to: "If you're reincarnated as an animal, what animal would it be?" Career awareness celebrates five years of student development

Global competitiveness is expected to increase the unprecedented unemployment issues in The Bahamas if students continue to ignore beneficial career choices that challenge their skills and cultivate teamwork attitudes. The Ministry of Tourism conducted a Bahamian Resident Survey in 2007 which revealed that Bahamian workers are perceived to project a lack of work ethics, limited career option knowledge, lack of career planning skills, and unawareness of career levels and wage category. On Oct. 1, the National Career Awareness Committee held a Guidance Counsellors Workshop and officially opened its Fifth Annual October celebration of lifelong job readiness for Bahamian youth. Under the theme 'Conquering Challenges... Cultivating Careers,' the committee will showcase a month of planned career related activities organised by the Guidance Counselling Unit from the Special Services Section of the Department of Education. More
