While other golf courses have lost members during this weak economy, Pleasant Valley Country Club in Massachusetts has added so many that the club has capped membership, and believe it or not, there's even talk of forming a waiting list. While hosting 45 PGA Tour and LPGA Tour events, Pleasant Valley became one of the most prestigious clubs in New England, but after the tours left, the economy hit the club hard, and some business deals didn't work out. The 2011 Missouri Governor's Conference on Tourism made its visit to Jefferson City Country Club for an inaugural "Missouri Golf Day." The delegation was headed by Gov. Jay Nixon, who was joined by Major League Baseball Hall of Famer and Gateway PGA Foundation President Ozzie Smith; PGA of America Chief Executive Officer Joe Steranka; and Mark Passey, director of regional affairs for the USGA. Together, they unveiled an economic impact study spearheaded by the World Golf Foundation outlining golf's importance to Missouri. More
A Cinderella story at Glen Oaks Country Club Club and Resort Business Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
If you asked Jeff Strahl, executive chef at Glen Oaks Country Club, West Des Moines, Iowa, to tell you the story of dining at Glen Oaks, you'd be hard-pressed not to think of it as something of a Cinderella story. In 2009, the club and the surrounding homeowners' association defaulted on a $7.7 million loan. Ultimately, Glen Oaks went up for sale at a sheriff's auction in April 2010 and a local bank purchased it for $5.25 million, after there were no other bids. In their fight for survival, many private club operators are experimenting with new ways to generate activity and interest. Some of the more-popular strategies are what Tengberg calls "minor modifications," like upping the number of social memberships, offering low- or no-interest loans for membership fees, and allowing members who no longer use the club to sell their memberships at whatever price the market will bear. In Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Notice 2011-72, the IRS states that when an employer provides an employee with a cell phone primarily for business purposes and there are substantial reasons relating to the employer’s business, other than providing compensation to the employee, then the value is not taxable to the employee.
