Integration Quarterly Magazine
Located on the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) campus, the new Golisano Institute for Sustainability (GIS) serves as a Western Gateway to one of the premier universities in upstate New York. The GIS wanted a signature headquarters building that would serve as a living laboratory for scientific discovery and experimental learning. The Institute desired a facility where students could focus their studies on developing sustainable technologies for manufacturing, transportation, energy production and construction.

Federal regulations lay out a number of ways the government can negotiate and contract with the private sector to provide services or goods. One of these methods is known as Lowest Price Technically Acceptable, or LPTA. While there are situations when LPTA makes sense, DBIA has released a position statement opposing its use in federal, state or municipal government contracting for design-build services.

Sen. Reed (R.I.) Named Top Democrat on Senate Transportation, Housing Subcommittee
Providence Journal
U.S. Sen. Jack Reed has been named the top Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Committee’s Transportation and Housing and Urban Development Subcommittee. The subcommittee controls funding for several federal agencies, including the Federal Aviation Administration and the Federal Highway Administration, as well as the Department of Housing and Urban Development, according to a news release from Reed's office.

Construction Adds 48,000 Jobs in Dec., Jobless Rate Falls

The construction industry ended 2014 on a strong note, with a surge of 48,000 jobs in December, driving its unemployment rate down sharply from its year-earlier level, though it was up from November’s mark. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Jan. 9 that construction’s jobless rate last month was 8.3 percent, well below its 11.4 percent December 2013 rate.

$3.5 Million Dewey Center Project in Waco, Texas, Moves Forward with Five Finalists

A project to rebuild and expand the Dewey Community Center moved forward as city of Waco, Texas staff chose five design-build firms as finalists for the project. Those firms will soon submit proposals for the project, and city staff will recommend one to the Waco City Council by March 3. That would allow construction to get started by early summer and wrap up in mid-2016.

Mississippi's Interstate 55 Work between Byram and I-20 To Be Rebid

Work on the 7.5-mile, heavily traveled stretch of Interstate 55 between Byram and the I-20 interchange will be halted temporarily so that a new method can be used to address unanticipated soil conditions, according to Mississippi Department of Transportation spokesman Jarrod Ravencraft.

More Than 20 Percent of New Jersey's Drinking Water Never Makes It to the Tap

New Jersey's decrepit water infrastructure responsible for huge waste, higher prices for homes and businesses. Every day, billions of gallons of drinking water are lost due to leaking, aging infrastructure, a national problem resulting in $2.8 billion in lost revenue annually, as well as higher costs to consumers, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Construction Hiring is Surging

The construction industry, hit hard by the housing crash and recession, is ramping up hiring in an encouraging sign for job and wage growth this year. Contractors added 48,000 jobs in December, the most since last January, and 290,000 in 2014, a nine-year high. That helped push overall payroll growth to 252,000 last month as the unemployment rate fell to 5.6 percent from 5.8 percent, the Labor Department said.

The Board of Directors of the American Institute of Architects has voted for Ehrlich Architects to receive the 2015 AIA Architecture Firm Award. The firm will be honored at the 2015 AIA National Convention in Atlanta. HDR and Hill International Turn Three Floors of a Jail into a Modern, Secure Healthcare Center

On any given day, the Dallas (Texas) County Jail adds between 300 and 350 inmates to its population of about 6,000. Among those new arrivals, at least half are ill, and about one in every six has some kind of mental illness. By bringing healthcare services in house, Dallas County Jail will greatly minimize the security risk and added cost of transferring ill or injured prisoners to a nearby hospital.
