Two decades of DBIA...Rik Kunnath remembers
Richard M. "Rik" Kunnath was a civil engineer who upon graduation from the University of Detroit went to work for Mobile Oil and then later in the petrochemical division of BASF. As Kunnath explains it, he left that industry because he realized that, as a civil engineer, his role would never be central to the mission of any company involved in industrial or chemical processing. In 1979, he accepted a job in Hawaii working for Charles Pankow Builders. This well-known firm was the quality construction company he sensed he needed to advance. Kunnath's career with CPB was a steady upward trajectory that placed him in the CEO office in a little over a decade. By 1993, he was a major up-and-comer at Pankow and was quickly tapped to oversee his firm's contribution to what would become the Design-Build Institute of America.

Purdue researchers create stronger, longer-lasting concrete
Lafayette Courier & Journal
When is the last time you thought about concrete? If you're Jason Weiss, the answer is every day. Weiss, a Purdue University professor of civil engineering, has spent nine years working with researchers and students to make Indiana's concrete stronger and longer-lasting. This year, the Indiana Department of Transportation will implement Weiss' research to build four bridges with high-performance concrete that can stay strong, resist cracks and save money.
Experience has proven that a carefully managed combination of people, technology and collaborative ideology yields the greatest returns on today's projects.

Design-build bill discussed in North Dakota Senate
A bill which would allow North Dakota to utilize a design-build process for design and construction of state highway projects was heard in the Senate Transportation Committee on Jan. 31. The theoretical advantage to design-build is that reduces the time frame to complete the project, while reducing costs as well. Rather than having a separate company to design, contract and construct a project, the middle-man contractor is cut out. In this method, the owner has a single contract with a single entity to provide the design and construction.

For example, if you're an Industry Partner member contact, you can nominate one owner for a free one-year individual membership. They'll receive all the benefits of DBIA membership - it's a good way to encourage an owner who already appreciates the benefits of design-build or educate one who's still undecided. And, for owners you'd like to encourage or educate or provide a networking opportunity, DBIA conferences offer some owners a scholarship to help them defray the costs of attending one of the conferences we offer every year.
