DBIA asks members to participate in McGraw-Hill survey
Dear DBIA Member:

DBIA is excited to announce its participation with McGraw-Hill Construction in an industry-wide survey of prefabrication and modularization in the construction industry. The survey, which also involves 12 other construction associations, will be one of the most comprehensive looks at prefabrication and modularization adoption and usage by architects, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors and other construction industry professionals.

The survey will look at both at both prefabrication and modularization users and non-users:
* If your firm is not currently using prefabrication and modularization, you will be asked about your current attitude and potential future interest in prefabrication and modularization.
* If your firm is currently using prefabrication and modularization, you will be asked about your attitudes; past, current and future use; and how these processes can impact productivity on the construction site.

It will take about 10 to 15 minutes to complete. The results will be strictly confidential.

We would strongly encourage all DBIA members to participate!

To complete the survey go to: http://web6.kinesissurvey.com/mcgraw/html.pro?ID=12&ASSOC=DBIA

Design-build ramp-up: Teamwork gains prevalence in today's market
Orlando Business Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Robert Smedley believes efficiency is the name of the game in today's world of real estate development. In the past, landowners and developers working on new construction projects would spend a lot of time and money first to have an engineer handle surveying and planning; then bring an architect in to deal with design and blueprints; and after that, hire a contractor to build it. The nuts and bolts of a design-build partnership
Finance & Commerce    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A public-private partnership (P3) is a contractual agreement between a public agency (federal, state or local) and a private-sector entity. Through this agreement, the skills and assets of each sector (public and private) are shared in delivering a service or facility for the use of the general public. Each party shares in the risks and rewards potential in the delivery of the service or facility. With the design-build-finance-operate (DBFO) approach, the responsibilities for designing, building, financing and operating are bundled and transferred to private partners. More

Columbus City Council in Columbus, Ohio, approves new contract options for design-build, at-risk
Columbus Telegram    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Columbus City Council in Columbus, Ohio, approved policies and procedures that establish two new contract options for the city, despite Council President Ron Bogus calling the move "poor public policy." The policies and procedures, prepared by former City Engineer Merlin Lindahl and approved on a 7-1 vote, outline how the city would approach design-build and construction manager at-risk contracts. Previously, the city used a design-bid-build process, Lindahl explained, in which the city hires a separate designer before utilizing a competitive bid process to select a contractor. Both entities report to the city. More

Plans for the new William J. Carroll Government Center in Vacaville, Calif., took another step forward this week as the Solano County Board of Supervisors approved a $12.5 million design-build agreement with an Oakland construction firm. Major funding for the project comes through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and Tobacco Master Settlement Funds. More

Finding a fix for the Tappan Zee
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on
FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When the Tappan Zee Bridge opened in 1955, the state of New York was on a building spree. Today, the state doesn't have anywhere near enough money to replace the antiquated bridge, which carries 140,000 vehicles across the Hudson River every day. That has officials considering striking a deal with the private sector to pay for the construction of a new bridge. If nothing is done, the bridge's owner, the New York State Thruway Authority, will have to keep spending huge sums of money just to keep the current bridge safe. More
