Tappan Zee Bridge: California project may set environmental example
The Journal News
The fish swirling to the surface were most likely northern anchovy and Pacific herring, according to wildlife monitors shadowing the construction of a new bridge across the San Francisco Bay. Gulls scooped them up as a massive hydraulic hammer nearby pounded steel pilings into the bay’s bottom. Presumably stunned or injured by sound waves expanding through the water, the silvery creatures floating up in May 2009 were among the few fish fatalities noted during almost 10 years of construction in the bay.

ARTBA's monthly report, "Value of Transportation Construction Put in Place," was compiled by Dr. Alison Premo Black, the association's chief economist.
