This legislative session, New York has the opportunity to take one small step that can pay off in a big way and help make the state’s infrastructure safer and more reliable for decades to come. Simply by renewing the design-build authority granted to several state agencies two years ago, the state can expand its significant recent success in rebuilding its infrastructure and putting New Yorkers back to work.

This year, the annual conference is being co-hosted by the American Water Works Association and the Water Environment Federation.

Obama Pitches Plan to Fix Crumbling U.S. Roads, Bridges
Reuters
President Barack Obama announced a four-year, $302 billion plan to repair the country's crumbling roads and bridges, but the proposal, which relies on tax reform for funding, is not expected to gain traction on Capitol Hill. Congress faces a Sept. 30 deadline to renew federal funding for transportation programs, and the Highway Trust Fund that helps pay for road and bridge projects is teetering on insolvency.

Foxx: 2014 "Busiest Year" for High-Speed Rail Construction

Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said that 2014 was the "busiest year" year for high-speed rail construction since the Obama administration began pushing for more railways in 2009. Speaking at the U.S. High Speed Rail Association's summit in Washington, Foxx said funding from the transportation department has helped double the amount of railways that can operate at speeds between 90 and 125 miles-per-hour.

Medford, Ore., Police Department Pushes Ahead with Evidence Locker Rebid

After a bidding controversy stalled plans for a new evidence locker in 2013, the Medford, Ore., Police Department is once again looking for a contractor on the project that's expected to cost more than a half-million dollars. The city has sent out a request for proposals to construct a 2,223-square-foot, two-story storage building at the Police Property Control site in west Medford. Last year, the project fell apart when other contractors cried foul over the bidding process.

Proposals on Design-Build of New Canadian Hospital Under Review

Transportation and Works Minister Nick McGrath expects to get down to work on designing the new hospital for Canada's Corner Brook this spring. McGrath said the tender that closed on Feb. 18 on a request for proposals from proponents interested in the design/build project resulted in several interested submissions.

DOT's Foxx Calls for Long-Term Transportation Bill

Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx is taking an ambitious approach to the next surface-transportation bill, due later this year, saying that “a one- or two-year Band-Aid won’t cut it this time.” In a Feb. 20 speech kicking off a day-long U.S. Chamber of Commerce transportation conference in Washington, Foxx said, “The United States faces a massive infrastructure deficit.”
