Two More Record-Breaking Conferences for DBIA in San Jose, Calif.

Last week, DBIA hosted the 2014 Design-Build for Water/Wastewater and 2014 Design-Build in Transportation Conferences in San Jose, Calif. Both conferences achieved record attendance numbers with 730 attendees at the Water/Wastewater Conference and nearly 900 at the Transportation Conference! They are all in the planning stage and are mainly new projects, but may also involve additions and/or alterations. Shopping centers, hotels, office buildings, medical buildings, educational buildings, libraries and museums, sports and entertainment complexes, industrial projects and government buildings will all be covered on a rotating basis.

The Office of Management and Budget's report calculates the amounts by which FY 2015 direct spending is required to be reduced and provides a listing of the reductions required. Specifically, OMB calculates reductions in FY 2015 of 2.0 percent to nonexempt Medicare spending, 7.3 percent to other non-exempt nondefense mandatory programs, and 9.5 percent to nonexempt defense mandatory programs.

Study Puts Price of New Orleans to Baton Rouge, La., Passenger Train at $262 Million

A study by HNTB Corp. indicates that a passenger train linking New Orleans and Baton Rouge, La., on existing freight tracks, with stops in between, could begin two daily trips, ultimately growing to regular service with a possible station near the New Orleans International Airport.

Project Glance: New Vikings Stadium in St. Paul, Minn.

Crews are continuing to work on the demolition of the remains of the Metrodome to make way for the new Vikings stadium. According to the Vikings, the final pieces of the stadium were dismantled over the weekend even though the final demolition was scheduled to be completed in April.

Three teams of architects and construction firms made public presentations showing off some of the designs they have submitted as bids to the state for a new state office building on the Capitol Campus. But the sessions were not tape-recorded by state officials, who cited legal confidentiality claims made by lawyers for the three design teams.

Congress Asks, We Answer

Recently, the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee held the first hearing of its Panel on Public-Private Partnerships (P3's). While the focus was on the use of P3's in transportation projects, the Chairman of the House Transportation Committee, Representative Bill Shuster, joined the hearing specifically to ask questions related to the benefits of design-build.
