According to the Design-Build Institute of America, "Design-build is a process that has been embraced by the world's great civilizations. In ancient Mesopotamia, the Code of Hammurabi (1,800 BC) fixed absolute accountability upon master builders for both design and construction. In the succeeding millennia, cathedrals and cable-stayed bridges, cloisters and corporate headquarters have been conceived and constructed using the paradigm of design-build." More
Anchorage, Alaska, senator wants to build engineering halls at UAA and UAF
Fairbanks Daily News-Miner Share
A Senate Democrat recently pitched spending $125 million for new university engineering halls in Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska. Two-fifths of the money would design and help build a building at UAF, and the rest would go to Anchorage. The bill comes from Sen. Johnny Ellis of Anchorage. He said strong demand for engineering training at both campuses could justify a new building at each. It's a discussion he said he hopes will play out through 2012 - his standalone bill falls outside the broader statewide budgeting process under review in Juneau. More
When adopt-a-highway doesn't satisfy in Massachusetts
With federal and state funding drying up faster than the Aral Sea, Massachusetts legislators are debating the pros and cons of private investment in the state's infrastructure. Whether it's building a new highway, fixing an aging bridge or perhaps turning Bradley International Airport over to a private entity, there are myriad ways the state could raise revenue through private investment, said state Sen. John McKinney, a Republican who represents Easton, Fairfield, Newtown and Weston in the 28th Senate District. More

When TECO Peoples Gas and SeaCoast Gas Transmission needed to extend their 80 km SeaCoast Pipeline, a large challenge was faced: the additional 2.5 km of length they required had to be laid beneath a river. TECO Peoples Gas hired drilling company Mears Group to undertake the task. To complete the project, Mears drilled a 2.26 km pilot hole beneath the St Johns River at a depth of 40 m below river bottom to install the 16 inch steel pipe. The bore was constructed by Mears using horizontal directional drilling, and the project was undertaken within a design-build framework. More
