Design-Build Threatened in New York

In 2011, after New York passed historic legislation authorizing the use of design-build, an optimistic mood spread throughout the Empire State’s building and design industry. Following years of advocacy by DBIA, lawmakers in Albany worked together to pass this much needed construction reform in order to efficiently deliver projects critical to New York taxpayers; projects like the new Tappan Zee Bridge.

Innovative Rogersville Project Freeway in Missouri Expected to Bring Growth

The Missouri Department of Transportation committed to Rogersville Project Freeway in 2013, a project constructing a freeway through Rogersville, reducing the number of intersections between Farm Road 241 and Chicory Road. The project is being carried out through a design-build process which combines both the design and construction process phases into one contract to save time and resources. This approximately $35 million project is the first roadway to be built through the design-build process in the southwest Missouri district, according to Sean Matlock, project director.

Arizona's Valley Metro to Build Solar Plant at Light-Rail Facility

A new solar plant will be installed at Valley Metro's light-rail operations and maintenance facility in Phoenix later this year, the agency announced. Valley Metro's board recently awarded a $2.9 million design-build contract to Natural Power and Energy L.L.C. to construct the plant, which will be capable of generating 780 kW of energy annually while reducing greenhouse-gas emissions, Valley Metro officials said in a press release.

Minnesota Transportation Department to Undertake 308 Road Construction Projects in 2014

Workers will undertake 308 road construction projects throughout Minnesota in 2014, a state Department of Transportation official said recently. The $1.1 billion program includes 74 projects in the Twin Cities and 194 projects in Greater Minnesota. Another 40 projects statewide will improve safety at railroad crossings, runways and terminals at regional airports.

Five Companies Invited to Bid for Next Valley Section of High-Speed Rail in California
The Fresno Bee
Five companies have been invited to submit bids to build the second portion of California's high-speed rail line in the central San Joaquin Valley – even before construction commences on the first 29-mile stretch. The California High-Speed Rail Authority issued its "request for proposals" Thursday for a 65-mile section of the proposed rail line from the southern edge of Fresno to just north of the Tulare-Kern county line. The work, which is estimated to cost between $1.5 billion and $2 billion, represents an extension of the first construction segment between Madera and Fresno, where the state agency anticipates construction to start this spring or summer.

PCL Signs $70.5-Million Deal to Build New McMaster Health Facility in Ontario

PCL Partnerships has signed a $70.5-million fixed price contract to design, build and finance the new McMaster Children's Health Centre. The contract cost covers the design and construction of the facility, as well as project financing. All contractual steps have now been completed and construction will start this spring, with completion expected by fall 2015.

Tandem Health Partners Selected to Build, Maintain New Comox Valley Hospital in BC

The North Island Hospitals Project in British Columbia has named Tandem Health Partners as the selected proponent for the public private partnership. The naming of Tandem Health Partners as the selected proponent follows an extensive evaluation of proposals from the three teams that were short-listed and invited to submit proposals to design, build, finance and maintain two new hospitals in the Comox Valley and Campbell River.

2014 National Design-Build Project Awards Competition
DBIA
DBIA is again this year recognizing exemplary application of design-build project delivery that, at a minimum, resulted in highly successful projects that achieved best value while meeting design and construction quality, cost and schedule goals.

For 2014, the Design-Build Project Awards program and scoring criteria have been revamped, with a greater emphasis on the team as well as the project. As a result, the project award levels are being revised and renamed to reflect these changes.

The 2014 awards submission process will be 100 percent online and will open on April 15. The submission period for the 2014 Design-Build Project Awards will remain open until June 2.
