Two decades of DBIA...Federal Sector Conference
On June 28, 2006, DBIA hosted its first Federal Sector Conference in Arlington, Va. "Command and Control" was the theme and sessions included at range of topics from key concepts for successful design-build project delivery to lessons learned through case studies of completed projects. Focusing on the use of design-build on Federal projects, the conference began with an inaugural DBIA Federal Owners' Forum that attracted owners spanning the breadth of Federal agencies. The first conference attracted 300 attendees, demonstrating a growing commitment to change across Federal agencies.
Department of Energy issues guide for developing large-scale renewable energy projects on federal land

Recently, the Department of Energy issued its Large-Scale Renewable Energy Guide, which is subtitled "A Practical Guide to Getting Large-Scale Renewable Energy Projects Financed with Private Capital" (Guide). According to The Guide, its main purpose is to "provide a project development framework to allow the federal government, private developers and investors to work in a coordinated fashion on large-scale renewable energy projects."

Senate Bill 335, the Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act, sponsored by Senator Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., was presented to the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee on Feb. 14, 2013. In March, the EPW Committee approved a $500 million pilot program as Title X of Senate Bill 601; the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA). The House is expected to vote on a version of the WRDA in April.

Baker teamed with Wadsworth for Utah DOT I-15 design-build project

Michael Baker Jr., Inc., an engineering unit of Michael Baker Corporation, announced that it has been selected, as lead designer teamed with Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction Company, LLC, a subsidiary of Sterling Construction Company, Inc., for a $22 million, Utah Department of Transportation design-build (DB) project on I-15 in Payson, Utah. Baker's contract is valued at $2.1 million for a one-year period.
Black & Veatch selects new chairman, president and CEO as Len Rodman announces retirement plans

The Board of Directors of Black & Veatch has selected a new Chairman, President and CEO for the company upon the decision of Len Rodman to retire at the end of 2013 after 42 years of outstanding leadership, service and dedication to the company. Rodman will continue in his leadership role through the remainder of 2013 while guiding a transition period for Steve Edwards, who will succeed Rodman. Edwards becomes only the seventh senior leader in the Founder, Managing Partner or Chairman role in Black & Veatch's 98-year history.

Southland Industries partners with Critchfield Mechanical on high performance computing center project
Critchfield Mechanical and Southland Industries, two of the nation's largest design-build mechanical contracting firms, have formed a joint venture in order to perform mechanical and plumbing work on the recently awarded High Performance Computing Center project at Fort Meade, Md. As the contracting authority, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Baltimore District will oversee the project.
Parsons to be recognized for exceeding small business goals
Parsons is set to receive an award from the National Veteran Small Business Coalition for exceeding the congressionally mandated goals for awarding contracts to service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses. The award will be presented at the 2013 Veteran Entrepreneur Training Symposium on June 11 in Reno, Nev.

Projects must have been completed and occupied by the owner after March 31, 2010. Entries from outside the U.S. - both projects and firms - are welcome. The deadline for entering is May 21, 2013.

Maryland 355 design-build project
On April 19, 2013, the Montgomery County DOT will hold an industry informational meeting regarding the MD 355 Crossing (BRAC) and MD 355/Jones Bridge Road Intersection Improvements. This is an initiative of Montgomery County in coordination with the Maryland State Highway Administration, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, the Department of the Navy, Naval District Washington, the National Institutes of Health and the Federal Highway Administration.
