DBIA, the design and construction industry's resource for leadership, objective expertise and best practices in integrated delivery of capital projects, released three position
statements approved during the meeting of its Board of Directors. These statements are the first of several to be developed over the course of the next year in order to continually disseminate design-build best practices and teach effective integration of design and construction services.

Marco Island, Fla., resident Keith Dameron describes his daily trips over the current Judge S.S. Jolley Bridge as offering an "awesome, inspiring and emotionally-pleasing 180 degree view of our island paradise." Dameron is among several people who feared losing this welcoming feature due to the new $28-million bridge, complete with view-obstructive traffic and pedestrian barriers.

The single widest bridge deck pour in Missouri state history is underway and will last for at least a week off the north bank of the Missouri River, as part of the new Christopher S. Bond Bridge. This concrete pour will be 134-feet wide, and will be placed in 70-foot sections for a total of 1,750 cubic yards. "Missourians have entrusted MoDOT with $245 million to maximize every dollar on this project
and get it built as quickly as possible" said kcICON Project Director Brian Kidwell. "Design-build project delivery enables our contractor to continue to find ways, like this single, widest deck pour, to save time and complete the project on schedule."

One of the most unsafe bridges in the state is about to be replaced. A new Yadkin River Bridge located in North Carolina on I-85 north of
Salisbury. For lawmakers like District 77 Rep. Lorene Coates from Salisbury, N.C., it's been a long road to get it done. She's been working on it for ten years, "You know if there's a wreck on the Yadkin River Bridge it backs up. I've been backed up all the way to Lexington coming home, and had to go around by Mocksville."

Buckeye Creek bridge project on U.S. 61 nears completion

Replacement of a bridge on U.S. 61 and the closure of northbound lanes on a section of Interstate 55 are among the projects keeping crews busy in Cape Girardeau County. Missouri
Department of Transportation crews began replacing the bridge over Buckeye Creek. The project is the first Design-Build Safe and Sound Project in the county. The Safe and Sound Bridge improvement Program includes deck and beam replacements on 248 bridges and total replacements of 554 bridges, according to MoDOT engineer Andy Meyer.

The Girard City Council of Girard, Kan., has approved plans to replace a section of city water line. Cost will be around $10,000. Needing replacement is 1,300 feet of 10-inch pipeline that’s around 35 years old. "This is the first part of the feed line that leaves the water plant," said Kurt Ziegler, utility superintendent. "This is the highest stress area, and we've had some frequency of leaks in it."

Michael Beaumier, vice president of Suffolk Construction, announced that the Sarasota, Fla., firm has been awarded a $9,498,000 firm-fixed-price contract to design and construct a data center at Naval Weapons Station Charleston in South Carolina. The Naval Weapons Station is a U.S. Department of Defense training center with a Naval Nuclear Power Training Command and Nuclear Power Training Unit, as well
as an engineering center with the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center. As the Army logistics hub, the station is the busiest continental U.S. surface port in the defense transportation system.
