Scholarships Offered – Design-Build Done Right for Educators
Specifically tailored for educators, the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) will host a Design-Build Educator Workshop to help university faculty understand the key elements and value of design-build, as well as how to incorporate design-build best practices into their existing curriculum. This will be the second year DBIA has hosted this workshop with support from the Charles Pankow Foundation (CPF). In 2014, the demand exceeded our funds, so DBIA and CPF are pleased to offer it again in 2015.

The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) has announced its fourth annual National Design-Build Student Competition with a call for student teams. The annual competition closely follows how real-life design-build projects are procured — it's a two-step competition, with teams responding to RFQs, short-listed finalists responding to RFPs, and a final in-person presentation at the 2015 Design-Build Conference & Expo in Denver.
Paul Ryan seeking $10 billion for highway fund

GOP senator backs plan to tax corporate profits for roads
Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colorado, is co-sponsoring legislation to tax up to $2 trillion in corporate revenue that is currently stored in foreign banks to pay for domestic infrastructure projects. The measure, which is sponsored by Sens. Leopardo Releases 2015 Construction Economics Outlook
Leopardo Companies, Inc. released its 2015 Construction Economics Report and Outlook, an essential guide to help business leaders, healthcare administrators, and government decision-makers understand the factors that impact construction costs.
This year’s report shows that different factors have opposing effects on construction costs. Low oil prices greatly reduce the cost of construction, and some material costs have come down over the past year.
Efficiency in Action
The Aurora City Council’s recent approval of an ordinance that allows taking a design-build approach on future construction projects is a positive step forward on the development front. Construction costs can be staggering these days, no matter what the size or scope of the project. Whether planning to build a new swimming pool, tennis courts, road improvements or dig a new municipal water well, there may be a way to save taxpayer dollars by seeking more efficiencies in the actual construction process.

$89 Million Construction Contract for Federal Courthouse in Mobile, Alabama
The federal government has awarded the main contract to build a new federal courthouse in downtown Mobile, meaning that a project more than a decade in the making may finally break ground by the end of the year. The $89 million contract went to a team led by W.G. Yates & Sons, which will oversee the construction project from its office in Biloxi, Mississippi. A pair of architectural firms from Washington, D.C., URS and Hartman-Cox Architects, are also part of the team.
Wired Magazine Tries a New Exoskeleton for Construction Workers
Russ Angold, the co-founder and CTO at exoskeleton maker Ekso Bionics, says he can tell how old someone is by which pop-culture reference they make when he tells them what he does for a living. Kids talk about the suit Tom Cruise wears in Edge of Tomorrow. Millennials name-check Iron Man. Gen-Xers go classic: Sigourney Weaver in Aliens. Nobody ever mentions Starship Troopers.
China BIM Users Find Business and Project Value, Says Analysis
China-based construction industry firms that use building information modeling (BIM) in at least 30 percent of their work are bullish on the technology to boost both business and project management benefits, says an industry survey of some 350 architects and contractors. Nearly all respondents work exclusively in China, about 85 percent said they were BIM users, and 94 percent report at least some “meaningful benefit,” says the SmartMarket Report analysis by Dodge Data & Analytics, the parent of ENR.
Gray Doesn't Have To Be a Dirty Word
In this age of political polarization, some topics — even stormwater control — don’t require drawing lines in the sand or choosing sides. The answer is simple: Integrating gray and green infrastructure typically produces the most sustainable water management solution. Finding the right mix is the key.
