Mortenson building nine new wind power projects throughout US and Canada

The Renewable Energy Groups of Minneapolis-based Mortenson Construction is currently building nine new wind power projects throughout the United States and Canada, all of which are expected to come on-line in 2010, generating more than 800 megawatts of clean, natural wind power. In addition, Mortenson expects to start projects, generating 800 to 1,000 megawatts. More

National society gives Pennsylvania transportation system bad grades

The National Society of Civil Engineers gave Pennsylvania poor grades for the repair and maintenance of its transportation system. The society gave Pennsylvania a D-minus for roads, a C for bridges and a D-minus for transit, pointing out that the state faces a transportation funding gap of $3.5 billion a year. More

Cleveland Medical Mart & Convention Center and Cuyahoga County have selected the Cleveland office of Turner Construction Company and Cleveland-based URS as the design-build team for the Cleveland Medical Mart & Convention Center, as presented at the Cuyahoga County Commissioners regular meeting. Turner Construction Company will serve as the design-build contractor and URS will fulfill the role of architect of record for the project. More

Norman Rotarians were given a sneak peak at the new Armed Forces Reserve Center in Norman, Okla., the hulking structure built over the past year near Interstate 35 and Tecumseh Road. The 240,000-square-foot facility, which cost about $47 million to build, is one of seven new military installations being planned in the state, said Andrew Carlson, the project's manager. More

The recession won't help get the last segment of Charlotte, N.C., outerbelt finished any quicker, but it will make the five-mile construction job a lot less expensive. State officials say bids for the long-awaited Interstate 485 project, scheduled to start next spring and be completed by late 2014, were up to 20 percent under predictions. "A lot of our contracts have been coming in this way," said Steve Abbott, a spokesman for the N.C. Department of Transportation. "It has a lot to do with the economy." More

INDOT closes MLK bridge

After further analysis by structural engineers from the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and its consultant, INDOT is closing the Martin Luther King Drive bridge over I-80/94 (Borman Expressway) to all traffic as an additional safety precaution. INDOT suspects the cracks found on the concrete beams have compromised the load bearing capacity of the bridge. To restore this crossing to traffic, INDOT plans to replace the bridge beams and concrete driving surface that form the bridge superstructure as a corrective measure as soon as possible. More

It took a little longer than normal, but a $394-million offering of senior secured bonds by Acces Recherche Montreal LP has finally been launched -- and priced. The cash being raised in two tranches -- $59.6-million of three-year 4.401 percent debt and $334.1-million of 32-year 7.067 percent debt -- will be used to build a research centre at the Centre Hospitalier de l'Universite de Montreal (CHUM), one of Quebec's largest health-care institutions.
