A pair of recent bills drawn up by Davidson County, N.C., commissioners will be introduced during the ongoing legislative short session, commissioners said. The board is hoping the Legislature passes a bill that would allow Davidson County to be exempt from formal bid requirements in construction and renovation projects and be allowed to use the design-build method on projects exceeding $30,000. More

'Best value' bid for Gerald Desmond Bridge design-build approved for $649.5 million

The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners on Monday, May 14 approved Port of Long Beach, Calif., staff's recommendation that the "best value" design-build proposal to replace the aging Gerald Desmond Bridge was submitted by the joint venture team of Shimmick Construction Company Inc., FCC Construction S.A. and Impregilo S.p.A.. The Board authorized staff to issue a Notice of Intent to contract with SFI, who qualified as the "best value" proposer by earning the highest technical score from the multi-agency Project Selection Committee and also submitting the lowest price proposal of $649.5 million. More

University of Windsor design competition winners announced

Newton Parking Structures Ltd. and MMMC Architects have won a design-build competition for the University of Windsor to build two new campus structures. The over $20 million project consists of two separate buildings: the "Innovation Centre" which will be a new gateway building as you enter the campus and will become the new home to services and amenities that will enhance the campus experience; and a 913-car, seven-level parking garage which will be connected to the Innovation Centre by a pedestrian bridge. HBD Construction to build new $12 million training campus for Local 562 in Missouri

HBD Construction announced that it's been chosen to build a new $12 million training facility campus for the Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 562 in Missouri. The current facility, located at the north St. Louis County headquarters, will be expanded to include two new buildings comprised of 97,000 square feet of training and classroom space. More

Arcadia's Colorado Boulevard might close for Gold Line work - really

Two days later than planned, Colorado Boulevard between San Antonio Road and Santa Anita Avenue in California might close to make way for the $735 million Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension project from Pasadena to Azusa. Although the closure was initially scheduled to start sooner, the Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension Authority's design-build team, Kiewit Parsons, decided it did not need to shut down the street so soon, GLCA spokeswoman Lisa Levy Buch said. Upgrades to Parkway North won't be ready for cancer hospital opening in Georgia

The upgrades to Parkway North in Georgia, which will become the main entrance to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America hospital, won't be done in time for the hospital's opening in August. The work will be a joint project of Coweta County and the city of Newnan, with the city reimbursing the county for a portion of the work. More

Quatman says, "I began my career as an architect and obtained my license after practicing for a few years in that field. I took a business law course as an elective and found it fascinating. I was also picked for jury duty that same semester and then read an article titled 'Architect-Lawyers: An Important New Breed' in Progressive Architecture magazine. The article caught my attention, and I corresponded with the author, Arthur Kornblut, now deceased, about his career as an architect-turned-lawyer. With his encouragement, I took the LSAT and enrolled in law school." More

Michael Baker Jr., Inc., an engineering unit of Michael Baker Corporation, as a major design subcontractor for the Ames/Granite Joint Venture team, has been awarded a contract by the Colorado Department of Transportation to provide design services for its US 36 Express Lanes/BRT Design-Build project located in Broomfield, Colo., between Denver and Boulder. HDR, Inc. (Omaha, Neb.), is lead designer on the project. The total value of the Ames/Granite JV design-build contract is $231 million. More

Alabama's Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority board appoints new member

The Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority in Alabama recently appointed Andrew Edwards as its newest board member. Vestavia Hills resident Andrew Edwards, President of Dunn Building Company, LLC was selected by the BJCTA Board members to represent his city, one of the two cities added replacing Mountain Brook and Homewood. Hoover is the other city in the realignment of MAX Transits efforts. More

Burns & McDonnell joins effort to build small nuclear reactors in Missouri

Burns & McDonnell, the Kansas City engineering firm, has joined Westinghouse Electric's effort to get federal money to help build smaller nuclear reactors in Missouri. Burns & McDonnell will help design the power systems of the 225-megawatt reactors, known as Small Modular Nuclear Reactors. The financial terms of the arrangement weren't disclosed, but Burns & Mac said it was "making a significant early investment of engineering consulting services for a long-term payoff in hundreds of new highly paid jobs" in Missouri. Dck-ecc pacific guam llc was awarded a $46.6-million project from NAVFAC Hawaii to design and construct the 30,709-square-foot FY12 MILCON P-822 Marine Corps Air Station Operations Complex, 17,104-square-foot Aircraft Fire and Rescue Station, over 348,000 square feet of aircraft apron, and related site improvements at the Marine Corps Base Hawaii here. The facilities are scheduled for completion in September 2014. More

Vasquez Rocks County Park in California is getting a much-needed facelift. Existing facilities are being modernized, the historic ranger station is being restored, and a new, state-of-the-art Interpretive Center is on the way. "The County is committed to taking an active leadership role in conserving natural resources and protecting the environment," said Mohamed Sultan of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works. "Because of the environmental sensitivity of the Vasquez Rocks Natural Area and the educational opportunities provided through the programs offered to the public, this project is intended to serve as demonstration project for sustainable design."
