New report describes time and cost savings from design-build project delivery

The design-build (project delivery method was found to provide cost savings of up to 43 percent and reduced project schedules by as much as 33 percent when compared to the conventional Design-Bid-Build approach for water and wastewater treatment projects. The results are described in a peer-reviewed paper authored by Smith Culp Consulting that will be published in July by the American Society of Civil Engineers. More

After more than a year of construction, the newest piece of the Interstate 49 South puzzle will be complete this week as the interchange of U.S. 90 and Louisiana 85 opens to vehicular traffic. The city council of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, gets police HQ bid

The city of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, could spend $122 million to build the new Saskatoon Police Service headquarters, if city council approves a project proposal from an Ontario-based contractor. The project's budget is about $9 million less than the most recent estimate of $131 million, but still more than the original $91 million price tag proposed in 2008, a new city report says. City council approved a funding plan for the higher cost in April. More

Despite $2 billion gap, state can't wait on 520 Bridge in Washington

Despite a $2 billion funding gap in the Washington state Route 520 Bridge replacement plan, the state can't afford to wait on moving forward with the project, the bridge program director said recently. The Washington State Department of Transportation expects federal approval in July on the $4.6 billion replacement plan, which includes a new westside segment in Seattle from Interstate 5 to Foster Island and new eastside roadway from Medina to Redmond. Planning has been under way for more than a decade. More
