District Department of Transportation selects design-build team to complete H Street/Benning Road streetcar line

Mayor Vincent C. Gray announced recently that the District Department of Transportation has selected the team of Dean-Facchina LLC to complete the design and construction of the District's first modern streetcar line along H Street and Benning Road, New England. The proposed contract was sent to the Council this week for review and approval. More



Highway 9 and 15 widening projects near completion in Mississippi

Mississippi Department of Transportation officials say work on the Highway 9 widening project should be completed by mid-August. Officials say the work on the 10-mile stretch of highway from the interchange of Highway 278/6 near Pontotoc to Highway 78 in Sherman is 95 percent complete. The work is currently 25 percent ahead of schedule according to MDOT. More

As more and more people become concerned with life-cycle costing for projects of all sorts, purchasers of construction are coming to realize that hiring the lowest bidder for initial construction is not necessarily the most economical way to go. Life-cycle costing looks at the direct monetary costs involved with a project, so that the owner - think especially of governments - can get a better handle on the long-term budget for a facility. The increased concern with life-cycle costing is a good - except for one thing: It rarely, if ever, deals with a project's environmental impact. Life-cycle assessment does that, and it's the foundation upon which the Athena Sustainable Materials Institute has been built. More

Luther College plans $5.9 million aquatics center in Decorah, Iowa

Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, has selected Opus Design Build of Minneapolis as the design builder for its new $5.9 million aquatics center. The 17,800-square-foot facility, many years in the planning, will be used by thousands of competitors from colleges and high schools, Luther students and community members. Construction is expected to begin in September and completion is scheduled for May 2013. More
