Design-Build Delivery Method Crosses 50 Percent Threshold on Major Projects
Concrete Products
Research indicates that more than half of construction projects above $10 million are being completed through design-build, the highest level yet for the delivery method offering an alternative to traditional competitive bid-build. A new DBIA report, "Design-Build Project Delivery Market Share and Market Size," also finds that use of design-build had remained steady since a growth spike at the end of the last decade, and remains especially high in military projects.

High Speed Rail: First Stop California

The future of transportation was a hot topic for attendees of DBIA's 2014 Design-Build in Transportation Conference in San Jose, California. With California's airports and highways at capacity, DBIA convened a panel of representatives from the California High-Speed Rail Authority to discuss the substantial design-build high-speed rail project they are overseeing and respond to the audience’s questions regarding the environmental review, risk management and the challenges the project faces.

House Proposes $10.5 Billion, Eight-Month Highway Bill
The Hill
The House Ways and Means Committee is proposing a $10.5 billion, eight-month transportation funding bill to push the debate over road and transit spending into the next Congress. The proposal, which was released recently, calls for a temporary extension of current transportation funding levels until May 31, 2015.

Key Transportation Initiatives Linger in Albany, New York

The New York Legislature may have left the Cuomo administration's two high-profile transportation initiatives on the table when it adjourned last month, but it didn't consign them to the trash. "I think we'll get there," said state Sen. William Larkin, R-Cornwall-on-Hudson, a member of the Senate's Transportation Committee.

Skanska JV Scoops $918 Million LA Light Rail Scheme
The Construction Index
Skanska has a $574 million share of the scheme for Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Hatch Mott MacDonald is the Regional Connector Constructors joint venture’s design partner. The Regional Connector will create an underground trunk line, connecting the existing Metro Gold Line, Metro Blue Line and Metro Expo Line light rail transit systems through downtown LA.

Toll Lanes Planned for TX 71
Austin American-Statesman
Bastrop County motorists traveling west into Austin via TX 71 will soon have the option of a quicker commute, according to Texas Department of Transportation officials. The Texas Transportation Commission selected McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. and awarded a design-build contract to develop, design and construct improvements along TX 71 from Presidential Boulevard to east of TX 130 in Travis County.
