The State Building Commission approved Chattanooga-based Signal Energy as the design-build contractor for the West Tennessee Solar Farm to be located along Interstate 40 in Haywood County. The proposed five-megawatt, 30-acre power generation facility is part of Governor Phil Bredesen's Volunteer State Solar Initiative, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and will be one of the largest solar installations in the Southeast. A unit of Exelon Corp. is teaming up with engineering consultants Shaw Group and technology company Toshiba Corp. to design, build and run new nuclear electric-generating plants in Saudi Arabia. Exelon Nuclear Partners, who's stable of nuclear plants includes Limerick Creek, Pa., Oyster Creek, N.J., Peach Bottom, Pa., and Three Mile Island, Pa., would provide operations services for the new sites. Seattle's glacially-compacted soils are notoriously abrasive to tunneling machines, and the most common reason for costly delays in tunnel projects is damage to the machine's giant cutterhead, a geotechnical expert told the City Council. "Clearly there is inherent risk in anything you do in the subsurface. You're dealing in ground you can't see," said civil engineer John Newby, a consultant hired by the council during a special meeting to evaluate the city's risks with the tunnel replacement project for the Alaskan Way Viaduct. Women's College Hospital and Infrastructure Ontario announced that Women's College Partnership has signed a contract to design, build, finance and maintain the hospital's redevelopment project in downtown Toronto. This project will involve the construction of a new 630,000 square foot hospital on the hospital's current Grenville Street site. The redeveloped Women's College Hospital will replace all existing buildings and consolidate most hospital services in one location, enabling innovation in ambulatory models of care and enhancing the hospital's stature as a leader in women's health care, research and education. Trehel Corp. has completed construction of the new facility addition to Greenfield Industries Inc. in Seneca, S.C. The project consisted of the design and construction of a 51,000-square-foot addition to the existing Greenfield facility. The new facility opened recently. Trehel was the design-build general contractor for the project and was responsible for construction administration, scheduling, procurement of all materials, systems and subcontractors. The nine members of the Public Building Commission voted unanimously to approve a contract with Conco Construction for the outpatient services building at the new hospital during a special meeting at City Hall. The "stipulated sum" for the project is $1,513,700. Commissioner Mell Kuhn explained that the amount is not the same as a "not to exceed" figure, due to the nature of a design-build agreement. More
