DBIA milestone: A new New York - Part 1
In the Spring of 2011, the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) experienced one of our largest legislative successes when the Ohio state legislature changed their construction policies that had been in place for 134 years. Our attention quickly turned to New York State, where similar laws had been in place for 100 years. Of course, the efforts to authorize design-build in New York began long before our Ohio success.
Design-build ... a new bridge in five years and two months
Pearl River in Rockland County, N.Y., is home to one of HDR's many offices. (HDR stands for the initials of founders H.H. Henningson, Charles Durham and Willard Richardson). HDR is a design partner with Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC for The New N.Y. Bridge to be built north of the current Tappan Zee Bridge.

Georgia DOT board taps builder for Northwest Corridor

The Georgia Transportation Board recently selected Northwest Express Roadbuilders to build the Northwest Corridor toll lanes project for $840 million, more than $100 million less than original projections. The board voted unanimously to accept a bid of $599 million from Northwest Express, one of three teams of construction contractors and engineers competing to build the new toll lanes along 30 miles of interstates 75 and 575 in Cobb and Cherokee counties.

Renovation of Denver's Byron G. Rogers Federal Office Building is on schedule for completion in 2014. The security, seismic and energy modernization upgrades on the 494,156-square-foot federal office building will continue its commitment to LEED® certification and ENERGY STAR® labeling.
Baker selected as subconsultant on Ohio River bridges project

Mortenson Construction and Studio Gang Architects selected as design-build team for University of Chicago's Campus North Residence Hall and Dining Commons
Studio Gang Architects, led by renowned Chicago architect Jeanne Gang, has been selected to design a major new residence hall and dining commons on the north end of the University of Chicago campus, officials announced.
Pankow/HKS design-build team win's Los Angeles County's San Fernando Valley Family Support Center
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works awarded the San Fernando Valley Family Support Center project to the design-build team of Charles Pankow Builders Ltd. and HKS Architects, Inc. The 212,000-square-foot, five-story facility will be located in Van Nuys, and will consolidate seven county programs into one location for the San Fernando Valley community. It is scheduled for completion in August 2015.

Walbridge | Brasfield & Gorrie JV wins DBIA Merit Award
The Walbridge | Brasfield & Gorrie Joint Venture was announced as 2013 merit award winner in the national Design-Build Institute of America awards program. The joint venture is being honored as the design-builder of the new two-story, 150,000-square-foot Navy Exchange at the National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.

CDM Smith is honored to have been recognized with four awards from the Design-Build Institute of America 2013 National Design-Build Project Awards competition. The Dania Beach, Fla., 2-million-gallon-per-day (mgd) nanofiltration water treatment plant expansion won a National Design-Build Award in the water/wastewater category.
