I-15 reconstruction project wins national design award
Daily Herald
Had the I-15 reconstruction project gone according to plans, the 24-mile stretch of freeway would still be under construction. But instead the record-setting project finished under budget and ahead of schedule, winning several awards in the process. The latest accolade comes from the Design-Build Institute of American, which recently awarded the project its Transportation Projects, National Design-Build Award.

Chobani plant in Idaho wins design-build award
Times-News
Chobani's Greek yogurt plant in Twin Falls, Idaho, recently won a National Design-Build Award for Industrial/ Process/Research Facilities. The DBIA says the plant exemplifies collaboration and integration in project delivery. "The 2013 Design-Build Project Awards serve to celebrate the people and projects that demonstrate what design-build done right can achieve to advance our industry and our economy," said a news release from Lisa Washington, DBIA executive director.

Two HDR projects receive DBIA Transportation Awards

Two HDR projects, the I-15 Corridor Expansion in Utah and the President George Bush Turnpike-Western Extension Design-Build project in Texas, have been recognized by the Design-Build Institute of America with 2013 Transportation Awards. DBIA awards highlight exemplary projects that achieve budget and schedule goals and demonstrate advanced and innovative application of total integrated project delivery, including design-build best practices.

Virginia committee recommends original Stryker Center proposal

The design proposal that kicked off the bid process for a new Stryker Center in Virginia earned the recommendation of the committee charged with researching and interviewing each candidate. The Stryker Center committee chose the original, unsolicited proposal from the contractor-architect team Henderson Inc. and Guernsey-Tingle Architects. The committee presented its recommendation to City Council in a special work session.

Skanska wins UK design and build contract

Skanska has won a construction contract in Westminster, U.K. Located in the Mayfair area of London, 34-36 Bruton St. has been won under a single stage lump sum competitive tender. It is a design and build contract for a mixed-use development, consisting of retail, office and residential apartments.

Gensler tops out China's tallest tower in Shanghai

Topping-out ceremonies were held Aug. 3 to mark the completion of the core structure of the Shanghai Tower. The last beam was placed atop the 632-meter building designed by global design and architecture firm Gensler. Shanghai Tower is a beacon of sustainable design strategies, anchoring the city's Lujiazui commercial district with prominent public spaces in a series of nine vertical communities.

Construction firm hired for Massachusetts Green Line Extension

White Skanska Kiewit has been selected as the construction manager-general contractor for the Green Line Extension in Massachusetts, according to an announcement from the Green Line Extension team. The announcement says White Skanska Kiewit is a join venture among J.F.White Contracting Co., Skanska USA Civil Northeast Inc. and Kiewit Infrastructure Co., and that the firm was awarded July 19 a contract to conduct preconstruction services for the rail project.

Texas will host world's 1st precast network arch bridge

As the bridge industry moves toward accelerated construction and precast components, the city of Fort Worth, Texas, is ahead of the game with the world's first precast-concrete network-arch bridge at a city gateway across the Trinity River. The bridge, which was designed by the Texas Department of Transportation and is being built by Tempe, Ariz.-based Sundt Construction, is scheduled to be completed this fall.

California's high-speed rail board adopts policy to manage construction costs
The Fresno Bee
Amid fears of cost overruns, the California High-Speed Rail Authority on Aug. 1 approved a policy aimed at keeping construction costs in check. At their meeting in Sacramento, board members unanimously adopted a plan to set and manage contingencies for individual construction contracts for the statewide rail system. That will include the $985 million contract that's already been awarded — but has yet to be signed — to build the first 30-mile stretch from Madera through Fresno.

Following the election of Gov. Andrew Cuomo in New York, DBIA gave a presentation at the Democratic Governors Association on the benefits of design-build. Cuomo and his staff were incredibly interested in working with us to change New York's construction laws that had been in place for 100 years. This had been an elusive goal of DBIA's for a while, and we were excited at the prospect of finally achieving it. Read part 1 here.
