Bridge construction starts, Expo 'well on its way' in California

Major construction began on the second phase of the light rail Expo Line from Culver City to Santa Monica, Calif., with the drilling of piling holes for a new bridge over Olympic Boulevard at Centinela Avenue. When operational in 2016, the $2.4 billion, 15.2-mile Expo line will run between Santa Monica and downtown Los Angeles. Construction of the first phase, connecting Culver City to downtown Los Angeles, began in 2006, and Culver City celebrated the opening of its station last month. More

Design-build data center for HCA underway in Nashville, Tenn.

Building permits have been issued for the construction of HCA's new data center in Nashville, Tenn., which will be built by DPR, along with design-build partner PageSoutherlandPage. This new data center is an expandable facility, capable of meeting HCA's immediate needs and accommodating future growth. The initial phase is the construction of a 100,000-sq.-ft. structure with a 30,000-sq.-ft. raised floor with 12 MW systems and related utilities, 10,000-sq.-ft. office area, and warm shell space for future expansion. Karen Durham-Aguilera, P.E., SES, Director of Contingency Operations and Office of Homeland Security, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will address attendees Thursday morning, Nov. 8 at the 2012 Design-Build Conference & Expo in New Orleans. Durham-Aguilera was most recently Director of Task Force Hope in New Orleans. She was responsible for development and execution of the Corps' $14.6 billion hurricane protection system work in New Orleans and Southeast Louisiana, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, and the long-term planning of coastal restoration and hurricane damage reduction.
