From Army barracks in interior Alaska to a coral reef research facility in Florida, more than 40 construction projects have been recognized for advanced and innovative application of design-build best practices. The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) announced the 2013 Design-Build Project Award winners July 31.

Subcontractors vie for slice of $2 billion Interstate 4 makeover in Florida
The conference room of the DoubleTree hotel just off International Drive was teeming with managers and owners of companies seeking a piece of the $2 billion overhaul of Interstate 4. Close to 250 people showed up for the event put on by Skanska USA, the American arm of a Swedish construction company and leader of one of four teams that have qualified to bid on the massive, 21-mile project.
Why modeling is essential for Skanska's green building blueprint
Global construction firm Skanska made headlines in July when it quit the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. But its decision wasn't all that surprising, given its long legacy of advocating sustainable building design and construction. Skanska's move protested the trade association's open hostility toward the U.S. government's support of the LEED green building system and its attempt to support an entirely new rating scheme proposed by the American High-Performance Building Coalition (AHPBC).

DBIA is introducing a series of webinars on best practices. Upcoming webinars include "Developing Acquisition Strategies" on Sept. 11, presented by Craig Unger, DBIA; and "Running a Design-Build Business: Profit, Risk and Leadership" on Sept. 17, presented by Tom Porter, JD, DBIA. DBIA Milestone: Revamped Design-Build University
In 2009, DBIA instructor and university professor Barbara Jackson realized that the best way to ensure design-build projects were done right in the future was to bring our courses into colleges and universities. DBIA’s University Program grew quickly and, in 2011, we decided to update it.
