DBIA will be taking a peek into the future to see what the next two to five years hold for the design and construction industry, and presenting this information during the Design-Build Conference & Expo on November 2-4 in Las Vegas. In addition to looking at macro drivers influencing the market, DBIA will explore forecasts for key markets, assess areas of growth and decline, and take a look at how the emerging talent market is changing how the industry does business. We will also take a close look at the future of design-build, based both on industry data, as well as on feedback from industry leaders such as you.
Please take a moment to complete this short survey so that your input is considered as part of this presentation. Results will be used in aggregate form only and will help us provide greater insight to conference attendees about the future of design-build. The survey will take no more than 15 to 20 minutes to complete.

One week shy of the official end of the season the sprayground at Ruth Moore Park quit working.
Liberty Parks and Recreation Director Janet Bartnik said there was almost a serendipity that the sprayground replacement was on the agenda for the Thursday, Sept. 1, parks board meeting. As with other work in the city, including the construction of the wastewater treatment plant and South Liberty Parkway, the Ruth Moore Park sprayground replacement will be a design-build project. “In a couple months we will have the final design, but right now I am seeking approval for services pertaining to the design and construction,” Bartnik said. The contract will go in front of the Liberty City Council Monday, Sept. 26, for approval. “We will have a 25-year warranty,” Bartnik said. “I think we are all hoping to see the sprayground open next Memorial Day.”

Even before the Flint crisis focused North America’s attention on lead service lines, pipes where top of mind for the water sector. Water infrastructure ranks as top concern in the 2016 State of the Water Industry Report.
State lawmakers have gotten the message from frustrated motorists who think the state has become too reliant on toll roads to alleviate traffic congestion. They responded by asking the Texas Department of Transportation to determine how much it would cost to remove tolls on state highways.
A state senator wants funding restored for a study on how to drive down New Jersey's high road reconstruction costs, which have been estimated to be more than $200,000 a mile.
That study was a casualty of Gov. Chris Christie's order stopping work on projects funded by the Transportation Trust Fund.
State Senator Raymond Lesniak (D-Union) called on Christie to reinstate $60,000 in funding to finish the Rutgers study, which is supposed to make recommendations to reduce the cost of state Department of Transportation road projects.

Construction of the new Tappan Zee Bridge remains on budget and on schedule after three years, according to the New York State Thruway Authority’s chief engineer for the $3.9 billion project. "Work is progressing just the way we expected it to," Jamey Barbas, the engineer, said as she showed the authority’s board a new construction video Monday. Barbas said 15 more of the 192 cable stays that will support the decks of the twin spans have been strung between the still-ascending 419-foot towers and the roadways since the first one was installed in July. She said the work will go faster now that Tappan Zee Constructors’ crews have navigated the "learning curve" for the process.
Kentucky’s new law authorizing the use of P3s to develop infrastructure projects will allow the state to seek much needed private investment in state parks, the top tourism official said.
Kentucky has 49 state parks, 17 of which are resort parks that feature popular amenities such as marinas, golf courses and pools, Don Parkinson, the state’s tourism cabinet secretary, said in an Aug. 30 interview posted on the state’s Chamber of Commerce news website. “We have more waterfront than any other state except for Alaska,” he noted.
Inspira Health Network has awarded Skanska USA a $200 million contract to build its new $350 million inpatient hospital in Harrison Township, NJ, according to the Philadelphia Business Journal. Skanska said it will use the integrated project delivery (IPD) method in construction of the five-story, 204-bed facility, and it will move forward with the architect (Array Architects) and engineer (Leach Wallace Associates) as partners in a single contract.

New FAA regulations passed in August are allowing new uses of drones, including in the construction industry.
In one of the first projects nationwide, downtown Houston is seeing drone technology at work at the new Hines building.
Sometimes it’s hard to see the big picture clearly, but drone technology is changing that for construction workers.
From improving energy efficiency to mitigating the impacts of climate change, businesses have been working to meet the demand of a marketplace that's ever-more ecologically conscious. One industry in which this shift has been markedly noticeable is construction, where companies have turned to new, more efficient techniques.

Later this month, MSU prof Nizar Lajnef will hit the bridge for a step forward of his own. He'll be lowered beneath the iconic, 58-year-old suspension bridge that connects Michigan's two peninsulas to place sensors under its deck.
The purpose: Monitor stress on the bridge's aging structure.
"We don't have to wait until it's broken and then try to fix it," said Lajnef, who teaches environmental and civil engineering at Michigan State University. "We're trying to monitor its health over time."
A poorly managed project can be disastrous for a hotel in terms of the resultant cost overruns, guest complaints, and long-term dissatisfaction with the installed equipment.
There are five areas where strong project management can provide for a successful building equipment upgrade including: 1) Project Team Structure; 2) Operator Involvement; 3) Scheduling; 4) Risk Management and Contingency Planning, and 5) Project Closeout.

PennDOT Seeks Private Partner To Develop Middletown Amtrak Station
PennDOT officials say their vision is that the partner will develop, design, build, finance, operate and maintain parking facilities that provide at least 400 parking spaces in an eight-acre tract near the newly relocated AMTRAK station, as well as undertake possible commercial/retail development.
Such "public-private" partnerships, also known as P3s, were established under a 2012 law.
