The Department of General Services in Sacramento, Calif., announced recently that the state's central utility plant has become the third state facility to receive LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Platinum, the highest level of "green" building design certification awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council. The central utility plant provides chilled water and steam to cool and heat 23 state-owned buildings in downtown. More
CBE abandons previous HQ design, retenders for new

The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia has put out an international design-build tender for its headquarters, signaling it has abandoned the previous design selected through a joint local-international competition. Universal Consultants, a local firm in partnership with Henn Architekten, a German firm, was announced as the winner of the competition in December 2009, taking the 200,000 Br prize money. SB Consult, a local firm and Geluk Treurniet Architekten of Netherlands came in second and Geretta Consult, a local firm in partnership with Al Ajmi Engineering Consultants of the United Arab Emirates third. They were paid 150,000 Br and 100,000 Br respectively in prize money. More
Exit 120 project in Arizona on schedule

The West Mesquite Interchange design-build project in Arizona is "on schedule and doing well," according to a city official who is monitoring its progress. Robin Cude, assistant to Kurt Sawyer, interim city manager and chief building official, said work on the Interstate 15 Exit 120 interchange has mostly been accomplished at night to avoid bigger impacts on traffic and to take advantage of the cooler working conditions. CADC faculty receive the Distinguished Design-Build Leadership Award
