The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) is seeking industry input on its project to create a design-build best practices document. The evolution of this document will be based on input from a broad spectrum of industry. "We fully expect that the concepts expressed here will be refined and modified over time," the organization says.

The next webinar in DBIA's "Design-Build Done Right" series will be presented live on Oct. 1, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Eastern time. It will be a discussion of the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs newly finalized rules. As with previous webinars, it will earn 1.5 CEUs for both DBIA's Certification program and AIA's continuing education requirements. This new webinar and the previously-presented ones are available on DBIA's website.

Behind the career: Kevin Coghlan
The Washington Post
Kevin Coghlan was raised in a blue-collar family. His father was an iron worker until he became disabled, and his mother was a business manger for a construction company, where Coghlan eventually went to work as a bricklayer. He says his upbringing forced him to have strong work ethic. He started out at an insurance company and worked in the financial department at a few Fortune 25 companies. Now he is taking on the financial department in an industry that takes him back to his roots.

House Transportation Committee passes water infrastructure bill
The Hill
The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee unanimously approved its version of a water infrastructure bill on Thursday after a series of amendments were offered and later withdrawn. The panel's markup of the Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA) took approximately two-and-a-half hours and saw debates about issues involving the use of money from the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund and the separation of water between Southern states Florida, Georgia and Alabama.

New Flagler Bridge in Florida gets smarter with build-in sensor technology

When the new Flagler Bridge in West Palm Beach, Fla., is completed, it will be smarter than the average bridge. The Florida Department of Transportation is including built-in sensors on the bridge to help keep tabs on its health and maintenance. It will be the first new bridge FDOT has built in Palm Beach and Broward counties with the "smart bridge" technology. But more are expected to come.

The World Economic Forum has released its yearly Global Competitiveness Report, which includes a ranking of the world’s best (and worst) nations in terms of infrastructure. The rankings are based on the WEF’s Executive Opinion Survey, which is a major component of the Global Competitiveness Report. Respondents were asked to rate their nations’ infrastructure on a scale from 1 to 7, with 1 reflecting significant underdevelopment and 7 the most extensive and efficient network.
