New Montana federal courthouse sets benchmark for design and construction delivery

The new federal courthouse in Billings, Montana is open for business after only 27 months of design and construction. According to the U.S. General Services Administration, which manages real estate and property for the federal government, the design-build project team of Mortenson Construction and NBBJ established a new benchmark for the fastest delivery of a modern federal courthouse. The formal building opening and dedication is scheduled for Sept. 18. More

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's plan to build a $5.2 billion replacement for the Tappan Zee Bridge across the Hudson River won approval from the U.S. Transportation Department. Cuomo made the announcement on a conference call with reporters. The permitting process, which includes an environmental review, typically takes about three years for a project this size, said Andy O'Rourke, a New York Thruway Authority spokesman. It took fewer than 10 months after President Barack Obama designated the bridge as one of 14 construction plans put on a so-called fast track for approval. More

CH2M HILL awarded contract to support U.S. Navy construction in Africa

A CH2M HILL-led joint venture has been awarded a contract to provide design-build services to the U.S. Navy in Africa. The Naval Facilities Engineering Command Atlantic and NAVFAC Europe Africa Southwest Asia awarded the $62 million design-build task order for a 185,000-square meter (SM) concrete combat aircraft loading area, three fabric maintenance hangars, a 68,000 SM asphalt taxiway extension, and an ammunition supply point required to support current and emerging operational missions at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti.
