12 professionals honored for leadership in promoting design-build project delivery include a State Senator, university professor, student, practitioner, two young professionals, and six owners. “Every single one of these award-winners is key to the growing use of design-build,” says Lisa Washington, CAE, the Executive Director/CEO of DBIA.
The Michelin North America Red Oak manufacturing facility in Anderson, S.C., has been awarded a 2015 National Award of Merit in the industrial, process and/or research facilities category from the Design-Build Institute of America. The facility manufactures tires for earth movers and was completed in 15 months, more than 50 days ahead of schedule. Gray Construction of Lexington provided design-build services for the facility.
New York is grappling with the challenge of updating their aged infrastructure in a time- and cost-efficient manner. To frame this issue and draw insight from the players seeking its solution, the Urban Land Institute (ULI) hosted two panels comprised of transportation experts – one from the public sector, the other from the private sector to discuss how P3s and design-build can help solve this challenge and the risks involved with each. And while the two draw many similarities, we thought it important as the only organization that defines, teaches and promotes design-build best practices, to point out some important aspects of design-build when comparing innovative project delivery methods.
Denise Turner Roth, head of the General Services Administration, has called on Congress to approve full funding of the agency’s construction activities at the St. Elizabeth’s campus in Washington. GSA said Thursday a study found its Enhanced Plan to build a consolidated St. Elizabeths headquarters for the Department of Homeland Security will save the government as much as $800 million and taxpayers almost $1.2 billion over a 30-year period.

New opportunities are opening up for contractors working on public projects in Maine. A new bill, already introduced to the Maine Legislature to be considered when lawmakers return to Augusta in January, would allow for public-private partnerships for the development and operation of public buildings and facilities.
Businesses that develop a solid plan before acting can double their chances of success. Similarly, planning in the early stages of a build project, although intuitively necessary, when done right can reap substantial rewards. When the design team considers a cellular wire management raceway system during the initial planning stage it improves the likelihood of success and provides many meaningful benefits.
The number of new construction projects rose considerably in the third quarter of 2015 in markets across the country, according to data compiled by Chicago-based BidClerk, a leading provider of construction project data in the United States and Canada.
The BidClerk Construction Index (BCI) reported more than 76,000 new projects valued at over $200 billion nationally in third quarter 2015; an upswing of 21,000 projects and $35 billion from third quarter 2014.
The task before the building team on the design-build project was not easy. The site was tight, with limited space for development outside the existing building footprint. New construction would have to take place largely within the historic structures. Floor elevations varied between the seven brownstones, making internal circulation a nightmare. Already tight existing spaces would have to be reallocated to meet expanded program demands, such as enhanced recreation facilities and new science classrooms.

The New York State Thruway Authority has redesigned its website that chronicles the construction of the new Tappan Zee Bridge to showcase the progress on the $3.9 billion project. The website, www.newnybridge.com, now features more videos and photo galleries that capture such unique engineering feats as the installation of girders over Metro-North Railroad’s Hudson line tracks in Tarrytown.
BIM was critical to meeting the schedule. Using as-built drawings from 1925 as the starting point, design-builder Clark Construction Group generated a model of the structure and supplemented that with field survey details. The as-built model included detailed modeling of the large existing trusses in the ceiling of the 12th floor, which held up the building’s roof where the main mechanical rooms were located.
BIM is great. But Connected BIM is better because everyone on the project team can collaborate on the model, easily and securely. Now BIM can support all the documents, decisions, and processes that are necessary to deliver an asset. Learn how multiple organizations share, visualize, coordinate, review, and mark up BIM models from a web browser in this 3-minute video intro to Connected BIM from Aconex.

The fast-track, $30 million project was completed by design-builder PCL Constructors Canada Inc. on budget in a scant 18 months, two days before its scheduled contract delivery deadline.
The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has awarded the $559.4 million Project NEON design-build contract to Kiewit Infrastructure West. The project involves widening a 3.7-mile stretch of I-15 between Sahara Avenue and the Spaghetti Bowl interchange in downtown Las Vegas. NDOT says this section of the interstate is the busiest section of highway in the state and has 300,000 vehicles traveling on it each day. The department expects that figure to double over the next 20 years.
St. Louis County Library’s (SLCL) $120 plus million Your Library Renewed Campaign will see 19 branches of the SLCL system either placed or remodeled. One of the first facilities to be completed is the new Lewis & Clark Branch, which opened on October 14 after a one-year construction effort. The 20,000 square foot facility, designed by KAI Design & Build, includes an enlarged children’s area featuring discovery-themed activities, a business center, three distinct computing areas, a community meeting room outfitted with audiovisual and presentation equipment, three study rooms, and an expanded teen zone. The original stained glass panels depicting Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, and their guide -Sacagawea, created by Emil Frei & Associates, were reinstalled in the new structure. The $6.5 million project was funded through a 2012 referendum.
The National Institute of Building Sciences has released a new white paper calling for sweeping action to improve the nation’s resilience to natural disasters.
“The current methods to incentivize investment in resilience strategies rely on three primary mechanisms: federal grant programs (with some support from private foundations); insurance premium discounts for implementing measures to reduce vulnerability; and the political will of communities, either in the wake of a disaster or before an event occurs, through the foresight of community champions,” NIBS says. “While these approaches have provided a level of resilience, they have taken the nation only so far.”

"We are really trying to understand how BIM is transforming the way people work and also how people are using BIM data as part of their work practices and how to design tools that better work for you guys," Staub-French said of research being undertaken at her BIM lab at the university. A member of the education committee for BuildingSMART Canada, Staub-French said this research is being framed from the perspective that BIM is much more than technology or a software tool. According to a definition published in a BIM handbook, BIM represents a new approach to design, construction and facility management that ultimately involves broad process changes in construction.
In Bass' view, this newfound abundance of processing power is opening new doors when it comes to computer-aided design and is redefining the term altogether. Earlier this year, Autodesk launched software called Autodesk Within that when given certain parameters, like desired weight and maximum stress, for example, spits out optimized designs that meet those requirements. Bass had a rendering of strange-looking engine block on-hand to demonstrate its capabilities.
