Via laser into the past of the oceans
GEOMAR
Using cutting edge technologies experts of the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel together with colleagues from the U.K., Canada and the United States were able to reconstruct pH values of the Northern Pacific with a high resolution since the end of the 19th century. The study, which has been published in the current issue of the international journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, reveals a clear acidification trend, but also strong seasonal fluctuations.

Dozens of monster hurricanes hit Cape Cod in last 2,000 years
Texas A&M University via Futurity
Ancient sediments from a coastal pond in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, show that enormous storms have battered the region for 2,000 years. The hurricane strikes deposited a distinct layer of sand mobilized from the adjacent beach. The analysis, published in the journal Earth's Future, suggests some of the hurricanes would have dwarfed recent storms like Hurricane Sandy in 2012 that caused $65 billion in damages.
