New study shows bacteria can use magnetic particles to create a 'natural battery'

New research shows bacteria can use tiny magnetic particles to effectively create a "natural battery." According to work published in journal Science, the bacteria can load electrons onto and discharge electrons from microscopic particles of magnetite. This discovery holds out the potential of using this mechanism to help clean up environmental pollution, and other bioengineering applications. The European Association of Geochemistry is highlighting this work as especially interesting.

Meeting Assistance Program awards 3 grants

The Geochemical Society Program Committee has recently approved three Meeting Assistance Program (MAP) grants of US$ 2000 each to: the Gordon Research Seminar and Conference on the Interior of the Earth: Surface Connections held June 7-12 in South Hadley, MA USA; the Gordon Research Seminar and Conference on Chemical Oceanography held July 26-31 in Holderness, NH, USA; and the RIMG Short Course: Pore Scale Geochemical Processes held Aug. 15-16 in Prague, Czech Republic. ELEMENTS: Arc Magmatic Tempos

The April issue of Elements magazine (volume 11, issue 2) went to press March 27 and is scheduled to be mailed April 13. In this issue, the characteristics, potential causes, and implications of episodic magmatism in oceanic and continental arcs are explored. A comparison of U–Pb bedrock and detrital zircon ages in arcs with independent calculations of volumetric magma addition rates (MARs) indicates that 100–1000 times more magmatism is added to arcs during flare-ups than during lulls. Episodic arc magmatism may result from external forcing on arc systems caused by events outside the arc and/or from internal cyclic processes driven by feedback between linked tectonic and magmatic processes within the arc. Changes and asymmetries in magmatic, tectonic, and geochemical histories provide important constraints for evaluating these poorly understood driving mechanisms.
