Earth's lower mantle may be significantly different than previously thought

Breaking research news reveals that the composition of the Earth's lower mantle may be significantly different than previously thought. The lower mantle comprises 55 percent of the planet by volume and extends from 670 and 2900 kilometers in depth, as defined by the so-called transition zone (top) and the core-mantle boundary (below). Pressures in the lower mantle start at 237,000 times atmospheric pressure (24 gigapascals) and reach 1.3 million times atmospheric pressure (136 gigapascals) at the core-mantle boundary.

Goldschmidt2014: Media Relations

Thanks so much to all of the theme organizers who have contributed suggestions of potentially newsworthy abstracts to be communicated to the media. The approximately 100 highlighted abstracts were reviewed by the Press committee, whose members represent the wide range of science presented at the conference. Of these abstracts, about 20 were selected, not only for their scientific merit, but also for their likeliness to capture public interest. We are working with a professional media consultant who is currently contacting the authors of the abstracts and writing the stories, which will then be vetted by the press committee before distribution to the press. The other aspect of the media program is the pressroom which will be staffed by members of the press committee. The room will be open for about an hour each afternoon during the poster sessions. All members of the press are encouraged to drop by. We will try to answer any questions you might have about the science presented at the conference, or to direct you to those who can provide more detailed information. If you'd like to know more about the media effort please contact our consultant, Tom Parkhill, or GS Vice-President Laurie Reisberg.

Deep earth recycling of the oceanic floor: New insight into the temperature of deep Earth

Scientists have recreated the extreme conditions 600 to 2900 km below the Earth's surface to investigate the melting of basalt in the oceanic tectonic plates. They exposed microscopic pieces of rock to these extreme pressures and temperatures while simultaneously studying their structure. The results show basalt produced on the ocean floor has a melting temperature lower than the peridotite which forms the Earth's mantle.

New underwater volcano discovered in Hawaii

The sprawling chain of Hawaiian volcanoes just added another underwater branch. The discovery means Oahu once towered above the ocean with three volcanic peaks, the researchers said. Until now, scientists thought Oahu was built by two volcanoes — Wai'anae on the west and Ko'olau on the east.
