Seeking life on the early Earth and Mars: Earth's oldest trace fossil reinvestigated

Over the past decade, evidence of bioalteration in subseafloor volcanic glass put the ancient subseafloor on the map as a possible environment for the origin of life on Earth. Subseafloor rocks from the Archean found in the Barberton greenstone belt in South Africa are some of the earliest and best preserved oceanic rocks in the world, making Barberton a target site in which to seek out early Earth biosignatures.

2014 Meeting Assistance Program support
The Geochemical Society Program Committee has recently approved two Meeting Assistance Program (MAP) grants of US$ 2,000 each for the short course: Interfacial Phenomena in Environmental Biogeochemistry: Fundamentals, Methos, and Significance which will be held Nov. 15-22, Cancun, Mexico (Grant Ferris, applicant); and for the workshop: The geological consequences of measuring mantle radiogenic heating: Future directions for neutrino geosciences held June 30 - July 1, Santa Barbara, California, USA (Bill McDonough, applicant).

Solving the puzzle of ice-age climates: Southern Ocean and explanation for 'Last Glacial Maximum'

The paleoclimate record for the last ice age — a time 21,000 years ago called the "Last Glacial Maximum" — tells of a cold Earth whose northern continents were covered by vast ice sheets. Chemical traces from plankton fossils in deep-sea sediments reveal rearranged ocean water masses, as well as extended sea ice coverage off Antarctica. Air bubbles in ice cores show that carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was far below levels seen before the Industrial Revolution.
