Largest photo service just made its pictures free to use
The Verge
If you go to the Getty Images website, you'll see millions of images, all watermarked. There are more than a hundred years of photography here, from FDR on the campaign trail to last Sunday's Oscars, all stamped with the same transparent square placard reminding you that you don't own the rights. If you want Getty to take off the watermark, you'll have to pay for it. Starting now, that's going to change. Getty Images is dropping the watermark for the bulk of its collection, in exchange for an open-embed program that will let users drop in any image they want, as long as the service gets to append a footer to the picture with a credit and link to the licensing page.

Study: Dishonesty increases creativity
The Columbia Chronicle
Society may frown upon dishonest behaviors, but two related Harvard studies have found that lying may increase creativity. The studies conducted in 2012 and 2013 measured the relationship between dishonesty and creativity in people after they completed a series of activities that promoted dishonest behaviors and innovative ideas. Results showed an increase in creativity when the participants lied or cheated during the activities.

Amazon buried my novel: Those search algorithms are for sale
Salon
Before reading George Packer's recent New Yorker article on Amazon and its relationship with the publishing industry, I hadn't considered what forces might be responsible for making a book more or less visible on Amazon. I'd only wondered why my debut novel was being buried beneath a pile of books that were about as far from my literary ambitions as possible.

7 tips for igniting your content with social media
Mashable
"Content is fire. Social media is gasoline." Jay Baer uses this analogy to explain the idea that content is the main substance in any digital marketing campaign; social media channels ignite that content and help it to spread. What this means for marketers is that content must be at the core of your digital marketing initiatives. Content is what people find when searching on Google. Content is what people share on social media channels.

Writer's Digest
By Brian Klems: I came across this new resource for writers from a company called Vook. It looks like a fascinating tool for self-published authors, allowing authors to track book sales that are reported through most of the major players in the e-book and POD business — Amazon, Amazon KDP, iBooks, Barnes & Noble, Nook Press, Kobo Writing Life, CreateSpace, Smashwords, Google and Samsung.

Barnes & Noble: A tale of 2 companies
Publishers Weekly
The release of its third-quarter results for fiscal 2014 and the subsequent conference call with analysts on Feb. 26 made it clearer than ever that Barnes & Noble executives are operating two companies with very different issues. Of B&N's two most important groups, the retail trade stores remained profitable in the quarter ended Jan. 25, 2014, although both sales, down 6.3 percent, and EBITDA, down 7.5 percent, fell.
