Supreme Court says copyright law does not protect publishers in discount re-sales
The Washington Post
The Supreme Court ruled that textbooks and other goods made and sold abroad can be re-sold online and in discount stores without violating U.S. copyright law. The outcome was a huge relief to eBay, Costco and other businesses that trade in products made outside the U.S. In a 6-3 opinion, the court threw out a copyright infringement award against a student who used eBay to resell copies of the publisher's copyrighted books that relatives bought abroad at cut-rate prices.

A book is a start-up
The New Yorker
The world of digital publishing start-ups brings to mind blogging in its nascent stages. The guiding principle seems to be: if anyone can scribble on the Internet's wall, anyone can become an author, and any text can become a book. Online, a book's form warps into something more malleable, and fired-up digital publishers are trying to figure out how to turn that into a business — even if it means a proliferation of books that might as well have been blog posts.

paidContent
Amazon Publishing said in a letter to literary agents that it will start paying its authors royalties on a monthly basis, up from every three months. 10 winning marketing strategies for your self-published book
The Vigilante Author
Some time ago, I published a piece telling aspiring authors "Ten Reasons You Should Skip Traditional Publishers and Self-Publish Ebooks Instead." Yet despite the clear advantages of "indie" over "traditional" publishing, the prospect of "DIY" publishing still scares the hell out of many writers. Their most common worry? "But ... how would I market my book on my own?"

E-books strengthen the independence of authors
The Daily Progress
By Andy Straka: I write novels. Whenever I meet someone for the first time and the question arises about work or jobs, this is the answer I give them. I'll never forget one woman's response to my not-so-universe-bending revelation. "Oh," she asked innocently, "have I ever heard of you?" In short, probably not.
