Hachette says Amazon needs to 'value appropriately' authors, publishers
Publishers Weekly
Amazon has finally broken its silence over the dispute with Hachette, saying that while the two sides are working hard, Amazon is "not optimistic (the issue) will be resolved soon." For its part, Hachette said it is holding its position. In a statement, the publisher said it will "spare no effort" to continue doing business with Amazon, "but under terms that value appropriately for the years ahead the author's unique role in creating books, and the publisher's role in editing, marketing, and distributing them."

The demands of book promotion: Frivolous or necessary?
The New York Times
Authors have to promote their books, and they have to be flashy about it. Especially these days. You can't imagine anything less frivolous, and more painted in grim necessity, than an average midlist bookstore reading in 2014. The audience is hushed and minuscule, the shattered-looking author can't believe he's there — the whole thing has the last-ditch solemnity of a persecuted religious rite.

U.S. is set for Apple's ebook appeal, but maybe it should be looking at Amazon instead
GigaOM
Late on Tuesday, the Justice Department filed its response to Apple's appeal of a 2013 price-fixing verdict that found the iPhone maker had brokered a conspiracy among book publishers to fix the price of e-books. The government brief is 117 pages long and recounts familiar allegations: that Apple helped big publishers create a new pricing scheme in 2012 in order to get books on its new iPad device, and to wrest the e-book market from Amazon.

How long until you can follow up on query letters?
Writer's Digest
Q: I e-mailed a query to a magazine editor three weeks ago and haven't heard from him. The writer's guidelines state, "Don't call us; we'll call you if we want to use your piece." How long should someone wait to hear back from an e-mail query? Is it appropriate to send the query again and indicate that this is a follow-up?

Reading bad reviews
Cristian Mihai (blog)
Whenever a book piques my interest, the first thing I do is go on Amazon or Goodreads and read the bad reviews. Why? Because, for once, I believe that by reading the bad reviews you get a better understanding of what works and what doesn't in that particular book. Also, I've found that those who didn't like the book are particularly more detailed in their reviews. They aren't just raving about how awesome and freaking amazing that book was.
