The Amazon effect
The Nation    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
From the start, Jeff Bezos wanted to "get big fast." He was never a "small is beautiful" kind of guy. The Brobdingnagian numbers tell much of the story. In 1994, four years after the first Internet browser was created, Bezos stumbled upon a startling statistic: the Internet had been growing at the rate of 2,300 percent annually. In 1995, the year Bezos, then 31, started Amazon, just 16 million people used the Internet. A year later, the number was 36 million, a figure that would multiply at a furious rate. More

The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If you were attacked by pirates, who would you want by your side? A loyal horde of head bangers, gangstas and hard-core punks? Or a brainy clutch of bookish types? You'd generally be advised to go with the former group. But it turns out that in the swashbuckling arena of digital piracy, the publishing world is acquitting itself far better than the brash music industry. More

Speaking to The Bookseller after the event, Daunt said he would consider selling other devices "in the future," if customer demand was there. More

Chicago gardener uses technology to connect growers, foodies
Huffington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
VideoBriefWhat if locating and buying locally grown produce direct from its source in Chicago was as easy as Google searching for the nearest BYOB? What if the city's urban gardeners were able to join a social-network-meets-online-marketplace that would allow them to connect with both customers and other gardeners?
