About a week and a half ago, I reported on and expressed doubt about a new estimate from Nielsen Pubtrack which said that 6 percent fewer e-books were sold in the U.S. in 2014. At that time, I had no evidence to prove that the Pubtrack numbers were off, but since then I have been digging into the background.
Today, I can report that the Pubtrack estimate of 223 million e-books sold in the U.S. in 2014 was not just bad, it was completely erroneous.

Several years ago, I was given as a gift a remote session with a bibliotherapist at the London headquarters of the School of Life, which offers innovative courses to help people deal with the daily emotional challenges of existence. I have to admit that at first I didn't really like the idea of being given a reading "prescription." I've generally preferred to mimic Virginia Woolf’s passionate commitment to serendipity in my personal reading discoveries.

One of my favorite misquotes is from Steve Martin's movie The Jerk. The phone book delivery person stops by and hands Martin's character a copy, and Martin goes off in raptures (here comes the misquote — ready?): "The new phone book's here! The new phone book's here! I'm somebody now!" You too, dear author, can be an official somebody.

There may be an overlap between the genetic components of creativity and those of some psychiatric disorders, according to a new study.
In the study, researchers looked at genetic material from more than 86,000 people in Iceland and identified genetic variants that were linked with an increased risk of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The investigators then looked for these variants in a group of more than 1,000 people.

Soon, reporters at two of the country's leading newspapers will have access to the most basic type of digital analytics: They will be able to see web-traffic data for their own stories. That is, they will at least know how many people clicked on them, where they came from, and how long they lingered. On Thursday, The Washington Post — in a concession to its reporters' union — told journalists they would soon have access to this data, which they had long demanded.

Gareth Cuddy is one of the most practical service providers in the industry. His Vearsa e-book distribution company is providing global services to publishers large and small and he is a pioneer in reading and sales analytics. He recently wrote a piece that concludes "whatever emerges from this next phase will surely be a complete departure from what we understand today as an industry" with timetables around it wondering whether 2016 will be too late to respond and whether we'll have an unrecognizable industry in 2020.

An editor I know once told me that on a weekday afternoon, during a period when he was freelancing, he looked out from the rear window of his Brooklyn apartment and saw a burglary in progress, a la the Hitchcock film. He called the police. When two detectives arrived to take a statement, one of them asked, "What were you doing staring out your back window in the middle of the day?"
