The GWA Symposium Program Committee is accepting presentation proposals from speakers for the 2013 symposium to be held Aug. 16-19 in Quebec, Canada. There is particular interest in proposals that address core competency topics developed by the GWA Education Committee. All online applications must be received no later than Dec. 28, 2012. More

Penguin to expand e-book lending

Major book publishers and libraries have been sparring for months over acceptable terms for making e-books available for lending. From time to time, they find some common ground. The Penguin Group plans to announce that it is expanding its e-book lending program to libraries in Los Angeles and Cleveland and surrounding areas though a new distribution partner. More

Kindle share of e-book reading at 55 percent

At the end of June, Amazon's Kindle family of reading devices was used to read e-books by 55 percent of e-book buyers, according to figures compiled by Bowker Market Research. Amazon's share was up from 45 percent in the second quarter of 2010 and 48 percent in the second period of 2011, and the increase was aided by the release of the Kindle Fire. Since its introduction in late 2011, the Fire's share of e-book reading has risen quickly. More

The GWA Survey Task Force headed by C.L. Fornari has updated the 2005 member profile survey to compare member activities and industry changes that have occurred in the past seven years. Look for a new Survey Monkey announcement in the next week and help the TF collect trend data that will benefit everyone. Return your survey response as soon as possible.
