Another e-book dip
Publishers Weekly
E-books lost a little bit of sales ground in the third quarter of 2014, according to data from the latest survey of book-buying behavior from Nielsen Books & Consumers. E-books accounted for 21 percent of unit sales for the year to date through Sept. 30, down from 23 percent in the January-through-June period. After the first six months of the year, paperbacks represented 42 percent of units sold; after a slight increase in sales during the third quarter, their share rose to 43 percent.

Some Minnesotans garden under the snow

Even in late November, Dawn Pape's newest garden was a welcome sight for winter-weary eyes. In her yard, under a blanket of snow, is a polycarbonate-topped, 2- by 8-foot box — or "cold frame." Brush aside the snow, lift the lid, and inside was an improbable vision: healthy spinach, kale, salad greens and other veggies growing in the frigid ground.

Magic mushrooms found in Buckingham Palace gardens

It seems that the Queen of England may have some hallucinogenics close at hand. Let she who has never let unidentified mushrooms flourish in the back yard cast the first stone. During preparations for a TV special last week, film crews noticed that one of the many mushrooms growing in the gardens of Buckingham Palace — the home of Queen Elizabeth II of England — was of the "magic" variety.
