What do you do?
I have been in the clinical and learning and development field for over 15 years. My role is unique in this industry and in this organization in that I am overseeing the new hire and clinical continuous learning of the clinical counsellors that provide counselling support to employees accessing their EFAP (Employee and Family Assistance Program). Our network is across Canada, the US, and global. This role requires both knowledge and experience of working as a clinician (e.g. working with clients with mental health concerns, knowledge and skill with clinical therapeutic approaches) and also that of a learning professional (e.g. understanding/executing the competency model, knowledge and skill with learning technologies). This was not necessarily a path I had thought of taking while completing my Master's in Social Work but there are many similarities and transferable skills from the clinical world to the learning and development world.
How can you help other I4PL members?
I would love to connect with I4PL members who are doing similar work — I feel like we are a rare breed but I know from just networking in various conferences and through recruiting even for my own team that training and clinical work go hand in hand for many individuals. If you are out there, I would love to mentor/coach and share knowledge and experiences. My clinical background adds so much value to understanding how people think and learn which goes beyond providing training to other counsellors but reaches far out to understanding learning and development for all individuals.
What are your career aspirations?
I would love to own my own business where we focus on building and delivering clinical training across North America and the world in various languages. I believe this is a huge gap in the industry.
