NIACE supports move to help adults improve digital skills

The National Institute of Adult Continuing Education has praised the government for the steps it is taking in supporting millions of adults to be able to confidently and safely use the internet, but would like to see an increase in funding for specific projects to make progress more quickly. The government's new strategy which aims to get 2.7 million more people online in the next two years gives important recognition to the need to address low levels of literacy as one of the most entrenched barriers to internet access.

It feels like we (ok, I) talk about MOOCs a lot on TrainingZone — in blogs, features and all over the rest of the site too. That shouldn't be an issue. After all, it's just learning. I was spurred into action to write this after reading a short post by Jane Hart, the workplace learning expert. Far be it from me to argue with someone as experienced as her, but in that post, even though she doesn't directly attribute these views to herself, she repeatedly refers to quotes that MOOCs are part of the old 'education as acquiring stuff' model."

The new lifelong learners

College enrollment fell nationwide in 2013, for the second year in a row, as the pool of 18-year-old high school graduates continues to shrink and fewer adults are returning to campuses to earn credentials. It seems everyone is concerned about the numbers for different reasons. College officials worry about filling beds in empty dormitories; policymakers fret about producing enough college graduates to remain competitive in a global economy. But do the numbers of students in college really tell us that we're on our way to living in a less educated country? Not at all. The official higher-education enrollment figures fail to capture a shift in how more of us are locating educational opportunities every day in short spurts, online or face to face, and for hundreds of dollars or at no cost.
