Even as the economy for us humans bogs down again, the pet economy has proved remarkably resilient to a weak housing market, high unemployment and those diminished 401(k)'s. The industry has continued to grow through the recession, albeit at a slower pace, and last year, Americans spent a record $55 billion on their pets, according to the market research firm Packaged Facts, more than the gross domestic product of Belarus. Green events standards, frameworks and protocols are in high demand. The International Organization for Standardization and Global Reporting Initiative both have been working to create sustainable event guidance in time for the London Olympics, and the Convention Industry Council stands poised to release its own sustainable meeting standards, five years in the making. Amy Spatrisano, principal of MeetGreen and chairwoman of the CIC green meeting committee that worked with industry stakeholders and the American Society for Testing and Materials International to develop the standards, spoke to Media Business about the new framework. Homeland Security Releases Risk Self-Assessment Tool for Convention Centers, Hotels

Because they host hundreds of thousands of people at events on any given day, convention centers, hotels, racetracks, stadiums, arenas and theme parks are at an increased risk for terrorist attacks and natural disasters, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which has released an updated version of its Risk Self-Assessment Tool (RSAT). CEIR: Expos Command 40 Percent of B-to-B Marketing Budget

Nearly 40 percent of B-to-B marketers' budgets in 2011 were spent on trade shows, according to a recent survey of 300 industry executives by the Center for Exhibition Industry Research (CEIR). While the 39.2 percent allocation was down slightly from the 40.2 percent allocation in 2010—it is up from 33.9 percent in 2009 and 35.8 percent in 2008. Even more significant: B-to-B exhibiting dollars soar against all other channels. Trade magazine advertising, the next biggest channel, garnered only one-quarter of the money that exhibitions commanded, with a market share of 10.5 percent in 2011, according to CEIR. More

The International Association of Exhibitions and Events (IAEE) announces the launch of the first-ever job analysis of the practice of exhibition management. The survey invitation has been sent to 10,640 individuals. The IAEE job analysis will create the exhibitions and events industry's first definition of core competencies in the exhibition management field. The job analysis is a set of procedures designed to obtain descriptive information about the tasks performed within a specific profession and the essential knowledge and/or skills needed to competently perform those tasks.
